Go get some, 82GT!
Brian's goin racin Friday! I'd be like a kid on Christmas Eve, and I'm guessin he is too. Just got an email from him, and I thought it'd be fun if everyone else here piped in. Here's my prediction:
60': 1.73 330': 5.00 660': 7.63 660': 88 MPH 1000': 9.83 1320': 11.81 1320': 117.5 MPH Quit thinking the "T" word bro, the car can sense that kinda stuff. Start thinkin ELEVEN!!!! Cuz it's GONNA happen! ;) |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Honestly, I'll be shocked if it runs 11's. I was thinking 11's with a 100 shot of spray and mid-high 12's N/A...oooops... I said the "T" word again....sorry Bill :)
|
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Good luck to you. You should easily run mid 12's IMO I run mid 12's @3000 ft with a 302.
11's on the juice are in the bag. No matter what happens it should at least be fun. My prediction 12.60 @107mph on motor 11.90 @115mph on spray |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
First and foremost, HAVE FUN!!! If it ain't fun, it ain't worth going!
Secondly, not to sound corny, ya gotta be "one" with the car. She can sense if you're apprehensive, doubtful, worried she'll break, etc etc. The harder you beats these girls, the better they like it. Lastly, HAVE FUN!!! If the car doesn't do what you THINK it should, just keep in mind all us suckers that can't race yet. And then think about all us on this forum that'll help you figure it out. Like Dark said, 11's are in the bag, but IMHO I don't think you're gonna need the squeeze. It's an awesome feeling when all the hard work comes together (FINALLY!!!) and the car stands up and performs like she should. You INSTANTLY forget about all the grief she's caused you, and at that moment you wouldn't trade her for Larry Dixon's ride!!!! I honestly THINK you are in for that feeling Friday. Might have some minor tuning hurdles, but you are SOOO there. Another of my favorite sayings, that I don't believe I have enlightened this forum on yet, This was an actual sticker on the underside of the hatch in my stang, so here goes: http://www.knights-rule.com/cgi/gall...-2/jj2+047.jpg Go have a good time bro, and tell us all about it!!!!!!! :D |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
good luck dude!
my prediction: 12.8-12.9 104-106 mph. |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Chalk me up as one of the jealous ones that won’t be going yet. Let her rip and come back and tell us how it went....maybe your night will give me the kick in the butt to get out and do a little tweaking on mine.
Good luck Ryan |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I don't have the spray hooked up yet. Still collecting parts for the purge system. I thought I had a deal on a nitrous selenoid locked up but I think that fell through.
I'm definatly going to find a way to trailor the beast on the first day of spray though. No driving to the track and back that night :) Stay tuned everyone, I'll be back here tomorrow night with all the details. :D |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Well....no racing tonight! It's been raining on and off here with chances of more showers this evening. I don't know if they are actully going to run tonight or not but I didn't want risk driving out there, at 9mpg, only to turn around later 'cause it started raining again. I'm going to try again for next Friday night.
Sorry Jester, I know you're as anxious as I am to see what this beast will run now but the suspense is going to have to continue. It's thundering now, as I type, so maybe I did make the right choice. If it doesn't rain the rest of the night, I'm going to be pissed though. |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
More anticipation!!
maybe you can get the nitrous hooked up?? |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Yep, and it going to continue on through this Sunday too (5/28) because they cancelled tonight because of "threat of storms in the area". Ironically, it hasn't rained another drop since this morning.
Stay tuned til Sunday folks! |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Oh my gawd, it's like smacking yourself in the thumb with a hammer!
It's supposed to be nice here all weekend, so you should be good to go. Had minor rain off and on yesterday, so look for that early this morning there. Other than that nuttin but sun and love! Let us know man! |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Hope You get to run today. not sure where you are, so hopefully no rain there and you get to run.

Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Well guys...I am TOTALLY baffled and confused
How the HELL can I go from a 1.94 60' time from last year, to a 1.73 60' Today and STILL run my old 13.4 E.T with 6mph less trap speed? The car launched like a rocket from the start all the way to the 330 mark and then seemed like it quit. What the ****** happened! Here are last years numbers on the left and today's on the right: 60'.....1.944 60'.....1.736 330....5.644 330....5.352 1/8....8.632 1/8....8.420 mph...82.16 mph....79.42 1000..11.224 1000...11.112 1/4....13.423 1/4.....13.404 mph...104.35 mph....98 Ok, the temp. outside was hot. It was 85* with 34% humidity. It was much cooler last year when I ran those numbers but still..... Here are the changes I made to my car since last year: Sumped fuel tank with Holley Blue pump an -8AN line Went from a 3310 Holley to a 4150 Replaced 2400 converter with an Edge 3700 stall I'm hoping it's only because my new carb. needs tweaked or because of the hot weather today.....or both. I don't like how my mph speeds are down either. It means I lost HP somewhere... a lot of HP! If I had today's low end numbers with last years top end numbers, I would be in the 12's. I don't under stand how I can gain over 2 tenths in the 60' and NOT run any better on the top end. I though .2 in the 60' usually means about .4 in the 1/4 E.T? I need some help guys...Jester, are you reading this? |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I bet it's a combo of carb and weather. do you have a fuel pressure gauge?
|
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Yes, I do and I was running 6psi
|
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I want to scream fuel delivery, but you have obviously updated that area here recently. I would think the weather would be partly to blame, but not for that kind of speed reduction. I have to think it is the carb....did u feel the carb was adjusted fairly well from the way it was running before you ran it?
Ryan |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
It's been suggested on fordmuscle that my carb. is leaning out on top end due to possible jetting, float levels.
I bought the carb. rebuilt from Ebay but I never checked the floats because I thought it would already be done. I was told you can't really adjust floats accuratly unless it's on the car. I'm going to check them and the filters. If the flaots are too low, the pump might not be able to keep up on the top end. These new low end numbers are good enough for 12's now but I just have to get this fuel problem solved. |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I would say definitely set the floats, that could be hurting you some. Have you checked your plugs lately to see how this new carb is running?
Ryan |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Heat and humidity are power killers.. I lose 4-5 mph between summer and winter. Next time you run, either find someone with a portable weather station, or see if they have one in the tower and see what the air density is. Your fuel pump shouldnt have any problem keeping up.
|
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I checked my float levels and they already had a slight trickle coming from them, which lead me to believe they're good to go.
What' the best way to compensate for heat and humidity? Go lower on jets? Jester, where are you at? |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Dont get too excited about your numbers equaling low 12's.
I pull a 1.60 60ft and go 108mph and run mid 12's. I had my #4 injector unplugged once and didnt know it and I still ran a 13.50 @99mph @3000ft. This was my first time out with the car I sure was glad when I figured it out and ran a 12.60 @108mph the next time out. I bet its a timing issue cause if you are going lean enough to lose 6mph than your plugs should tell the story. The electrodes should be bright white if that is the case. |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
My buddy's mustang, last year pulled the same 60' as I did this year and was good enough for high 11's. If my setup can't run 12's with a 351 then there's something waaaaay wrong.

I was pulling 1.7 60fts when my my car was nearly stock and in the 14's. Slicks make good 60 ft's and HP takes over from there you are lacking in the HP department for whatever reason. Where I live it is 100 degrees everyday and the most my mph ever varies is 1.5mph from winter to summer. I am just trying to help probably noone here is at the track more than me. Nearly every weekend I am at the track. literaly over 300 1/4 mile passes. Obviously there is something waaaaay wrong when you lose 50hp. You need to find your 50HP and then some to get where you want to be. I hope its something simple. |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Sounds like fuel to me too bro. Did ya yank the plugs at all and see if it was lean/fat? I'm guessing fat. Remember, fat is safe, but lean is fast.
Still running a duraspark ditzy? Get a good light and see when/how much timing it's throwing in. Sometimes (mine included) those things are goofy with the advance. Unlpug and block off the vaccuum advance at the track, set the base timing, and LEAVE the vacuum advance disconnected. Check the plugs, adjust the jets accordingly. No power valves, right? Didn't we already get rid of those? Did the car feel like it nosed over? You were already losing ponies at half track. Launching that hard, ya definitely need jet extensions in the rear, and center hung floats. Don't get freaked out bro, it's just a weather and tuning issue. I made you a promise, and I intend on keeping it!!! :D |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Bill, my dizzy is a Mallory unilit model.(no vacuum advance). My front plugs seem to be normal and the rear plugs are white. Does that suggest lean secondary jetting?
My jets, right now, are 69/76, which a lot of people on fordmuscle, say is on the lean side for this engine. Check out the replies over on FM and see what you make of their suggestions. Some say I'm lean, other say I'm rich. I wanna say I'm lean because it runs hard to the 1/8 mile and then noses over. I think if I was too rich, I would have a bog and she would take off when she actually needed the extra fuel. See my line of thinking there? Re: Go get some, 82GT!
OK, here is something interesting I found just now. I did a fuel flow test and it took the pump 33-34 seconds to fill 1 gallon container. THEN, I did the same test with my electric fan running and it took 40 seconds to fill it.
It seems when the fan is running, the pump loses power because of the fan. Also, the pump gets much quieter when the fan is ON. |

BRAKE SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION. Learn it, live it, know it, love it! And then to drop down to 40 seconds with the fan running, that just sux bro. How exactly do you have this Holley Blue wired? Relay???? Yes, you have a relay, RIGHT???? |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Yep, I have a relay wired BUT I took a short cut and powered my pump relay with the hot wire going to the fan relay instead of running a seperate hot wire from the battery.
I don't know if that makes a difference or not but that's how it's wired now. Also remember that the fan and pump were only running off of 12v. since the car wasn't running and seeing the full 14.5v. I also know that while driving, the pump gets quiet the second the fan is turned on. Could the fan be robbing current from the pump because they share the same hot wire? |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
I am no wiring whiz, actually I have caught almost every car I own on fire. With that said, I will give my 2 cents. I ran a certain gauge wire to my electric fan, to make sure it could handle the draw and not get to hot and possibly burn up on me. Now if I read your post right, you wired the fuel pump using the fan’s hot wire? I would think it needs it own lead dedicated to just the pump.
I think you have probably just found your lost MPH. No short cuts.. run it again....and come back and tell us how she did! Ryan |
Re: Go get some, 82GT!
Sounds like that should be your problem.
If you can get your mph back you should be somewhere in the 12's. |
