Question Is this a good deal for motor and tranny?

I have a buddy who is trying to sell a complete 400cui motor and C-6 (or so we think) tranny that is out of a 1974 T-Bird. He says the motor is complete, from the carb to the oil pan, including the accesories. He is asking $500 for both, but said he would sell me the 2 for $300. I would like to get this, but honestly don't know what I would do with it. Anybody know anything about this block? A friend of his was telling him that its a 351 made into a 400, but supposedly its not a stroker? How is that possible? Just curious if anybody has any ideas on this. I figure for $300 I couldn't go too wrong.

According to the references I have the 400 was not placed into the 1974 Thunderbird. The Thunderbird is listed with the 460.

I think the information may be incomplete though, as the Mercury Cougar (platform mate) did list a 400ci in 1974.

The 1974 400ci engine is a 4.0" bore, and a 4.0" stroke. It was rated at a whopping 170hp@3400rpm and 330lb/ft@2000rpm. Those ratings are net, not gross. Figure 135rwhp with a C-6. It made the power via a 2bbl carb and 8.0:1 compression.

You may be able to get it to wake up by replacing the pistons along with the intake and carb, but in the end, you're left with a relatively unknown engine. I've never really heard much about the 400, so I'd probably use something else.

Had a BB 400 in a 77 ford 4x4, it was a piece of **** !!!!!!!!!!!!! from what i heard it was based on the 351M motor (but that was along time ago so don't quote me)...

swapped it for a 360, what a difference...

sorry not much help, but I would say no to the $300 motor... at a minimum, you have alot of $$$$ to spend to make it a dependable motor..

Black,84 GT,ground effects,shorty headers, 'open' dual exh.,302 HO(no pollution control crap)bored .060,T5,89 ported heads,edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 2122 cam,600 Holley, high volume oil pump...

Some day (3:73 gears & N2O)!!!

will this ever end????

Great thanks for all your guy's responses. I wasn't sure about the motor, so I figured I would ask the people who would know! I'm not one to want a big block anyway. Would rather get my 331, but I figured it never hurt to find out what I could about this motor to see if I wanted it for some reason. I appreciate all the replys.
