grinding going into reverse

got a question...my '87 5.0 T-5 5-speed grinds when moving shifter into reverse, regardless of amount of pedal. ordered a new MGW short throw (that thing looks/ sound like it's the sh*t) to replace the ugly Hurst in there now. will this help, or am i looking at a tranny rebuild? will a fluid change help? any tricks? car reverses fine, but sounds like crap.

Re: grinding going into reverse

revers is un-synchronized, so it will almost always grind if the clutch has spun the input shaft before shifting it into reverse.

Re: grinding going into reverse

Before throwing my car in reverse, I got in the habit of putting it up into fifth first, then right down into reverse. This seemed to always prevent reverse from grinding. You may give that a try.

Also, make sure you are at a complete stop too. As tmoss said, reverse does not have synchros, so you don't won't anything spinnnig when trying to engage it.

Yeah I always throw mine in second before I put it in reverse.
