351W heads on 289?
hey guys,
I read in a article that you can put 351W heads on a 289. I am very interested in doing this since i found a few heads online for just about $20 saying there were no cracks, for $20 i can take a risk. At that price that is something i can do very easily, the rebuild cost shouldnt be more that $200-300 right? Unless i port them out all the way, but i might wait till i get an intake. What i wanted to ask you guys though is what would i need to get besides the heads to make this work. Like am i going to need a 351 intake too? And i need to make sure that they are Windsor heads correct? The article didnt say that you could use 351C heads. Also, besides that, would i need to do any special machining to the block or anything else. Anything other than stock can you guys list so that i can make sure im not getting my self into something too deep. One last question, How would some edelbrock heads for a 289 compare to some 351W heads on a 289 fully ported? Im sure you guys can tell I am on a budget, heh heh being 18 and all. ---Anthony ------------------ Under Construction 66 Coupe -289 V8 - 600cfm Holley -Tri-Y Headers - Flowmaster 2.5 dual exaust, Centerforce Dual Friction |

Adding windsor heads to a 289-302 engine is a popular mod with even greater modification its easy to add cleavland heads and make it a boss 302. I'd rather go with the windsor heads though. they have 1.84 intake 1.54 exhaust valves compared to 1.78 intake and 1.48 exhaust on the 289-302 castings. Rebuilding heads isn't difficult just have the shop check them for cracks, clean, install hardenened seats, and valve guides. The rest you can do at home with a valve spring compressor. Valves, locks, retainers, and springs will run about $250. Then you'll also need a dowel set that fills the slack on the head bolts since 289-302 use 7/16 bolts and the windsors have 1/2. A set of those heads ported will flow the same as a bock stock edlebrock heads. But the edelbrocks can still be ported. If you do all the work yourself including oil, filter, coolant, gaskets, and the finished heads it should run about $600 bucks without porting. You might want to try home porting. I'd port them even if I didn't have an intake so when you do have it there is no need to remove them. -OR- you can have your heads machined for 1.94 intake and 1.6 exhaust valves then port them.

Racer, that's what I have and they work very well. Try to get '69-70 heads as later ones have big chambers and small valves. Mine are milled to 9.5/1 CR, with a 3 angle valve job, have 1.85/1.55 valves and are pocket ported and gasket matched. I think I have maybe $500 in them. My mild street combo makes 300 flywheel HP I think.
I'm soon gonna get TFTW heads and have them cleaned up as well. New 1.7 TF rockers and pushrods. I'm hoping for another 35-50 HP, but who knows. I did use the stock head bolts on my 351W heads even though special step washers are available and recommended, I've done without them and not had problems. If I did it over now that I'm better informed I would use them. Better yet are ARP special stepped high strenghth head bolts made just for that purpose. Racer, the 351 heads work nice ported, but will never outflow out of the box aftermarket heads. Still ,if you're on a budget they're not bad. I'd recommend World Products iron heads. They're between $750-800. They'll outflow 69 castings easily. However, $20 is a lot cheaper than $800. That being said, if you still use the 351 heads use a 302 manifold. I say get the World Products iron heads, solid lifter cam, and a victor Jr. intake with a 750 double pumper, and rev that sucker to 7000RPM's. That's what I do to mine and it traps 107mph at 3000ft elevation.
