Question GT40 intake good enough?

I recently aquired a set of edelbrock preformer heads from a friend they are the 1.90 int valves any way im now looking into intakes and another friend of mine has a used GT40 for $400 and i was wondering if the GT40 would flow enough to be farily equaly matched with the heads.Money isnt a real big deal so $200 more for something that is going to preform alot better is worth it for me,but on the other hand if i can save $200 and have little or no diffrence compared to a new intake of a diffrent brand then COOL!Besides the GT40 looks really cool.Any imput appreciated.

There is so very little difference in performance between the GT-40, Cobra, and the Explorer intakes, it makes it hard to justify spending the extra money on the GT-40. Yeah, it looks cool, but honestly there will be no performance gain from one to the other. Actually, if you want to get technical, all three use the exact same lower intake. The upper is the only difference.

Explorer used $200-250
Cobra used $250-300
Cobra new $400

It's up to you, but for performance, the TFS intake costs the same as the used GT-40 you are thinking of buying, and it will flow quite a bit better.

That aside, the GT-40 intake is a solid piece, and it will work just fine with those heads.

The GT-40 will work well. It makes a lot of torque. Some of the other, newer intakes make more top end power but less low end torque. People generally only pay attention to the peak hp number and nothing below that.

I believe the best long runner intake available right now is the Holley systemax.

A 65 mm throttle body will do just fine.

FWIW, I run a GT-40 intake and a 65mm Motorsport throttle body.

Thumbs up

I'm running the GT-40 and 65MM T-Body along with AFR 165 heads and its a nice, torquey, streetable combo not to mention that the GT-40 is the coolest looking EFI intake around IMHO. The long runner design helps out in the low end torque department.

If you go with the Trick Flow intake the opening on the intake is 70mm, so I would get a 70mm TB.

Thats not true, the 65mm is better all around for a N/A, mild street motor, regardless of intake opening size. If the TB were bigger than the intake opening, sure, you would have a problem, but being smaller makes no difference that you will notice, and the increased throttle response of the 65 mm TB is preferred.

And the trick flow opening is 75mm I thought?

Exclamation

I own a Trick Flow intake on my '88 and it is a 75 mm opening, I went with a 75mm BBK/Edelbrock throttle body and spacer, and went with a Pro-Flow MAF meter to keep everything 75 mm and the thing is very responsive. I have owned a 65 mm throttle body (by Motorsport) and I didn't notice any difference in throttle response between the two other than I make more power with the bigger opening. I also have EEC IV mass air, Edelbrock aluminum heads with a 1.90 intake/1.60 exhaust, long tube headers and a Comp Cam and the thing screams! Jeff
