I like my BBK long tubes, but I have a TKO 5 speed. I "think" they will fit just as good.

I know for sure that MAC and Bassani make longtubes designed to fit around the AOD. I'm not too sure it BBK does, but they might.

We've got BBK long tubes on one car and BBK equal length shorties on the 331 Stroker, I didn't install the shorties but the long tubes were a lot of fun to get in. Once in place everything fit like it was actually designed to. It's a little tight on the driver's side near the steering shaft but I understand all long tubes are close.
One word of caution, you have to get the engine really up there to get the passenger side in and if you're not careful you can break the heater core inlet pipes (this sux believe me). I'm guessing but I don't think you have to raise the engine to install the shorties.

Default you no

first off why ? is the question you ask yourself . if you have a fairly moded 5.0 ,you would still ask this question . If your dynoed at 350 hp then maybe . If not , don't give yourself headaces . cause you don't need any ( and we could go into this forever ) if headers are your cure ! unequal length , there are many , anymore than $160 ,your paying to much . and the ease of install

You do have a point. Long tubes are geared more toward high horsepower use and for most street applications, the shorties would work fine. My son who has the long tubes started with a plan he knew would take several years to complete and eventually he is hoping for around 450 horses with the blower . . .BUT, that's still a few months off and he still has some heads to buy first. It's gettin there but it takes time. FYI.. . .the 88 with the shorties pulls like a bull, harder than the 351-C in the 82 and the only mods it has are MSD 6AL, shorties and a Mallory coil, True, it is a 331 and I guess this accounts for a bunch of the torque but probably wouldn't benefit from long tubes until a lot more "stuff" is added.

I almost forgot, the instructions that came with the long tubes said they will not work with an AOD.

all i can say is stay away from Mac! they are very cheaply made. Ford Racing makes a decent set and so does JBA.

I got the MAC equal lengths, their not bad but the tubes are a ***** to manipulate if you take them back off and then try to get the bolts started to put them on. When I get new exhaust I'm going with some full length BBK/dr. Gas Xpipe/single or two chambers w/turndowns.
