Default heads/cam or stroker

i cant deside on what to do...i was thinken of either afr 165's or TFS heads and custom cam on my car...but then again my car is geting to the 100K mark and even if i do heads and cam how long will it last?? so im asken for opinions if i should do the heads and cam...or

save my money and do a 331 using the stock block??

P.S. if i just do heads and cam what do you guys suggest with a TFS street intake...TFS heads or AFR 165's?

Don't even bother with a stroker if you don't have heads/cam to support it already. You won't gain more than 10-20hp, if that.

I usually avoid these questions because there are so many factors involved that end up being based on opinion. What you need to do is decide exactly what you want, and start figuring out what it will take to get there. Then come up with costs, and start saving your money. I agree with Unit, but I also think that putting a cam and heads on your engine would be a waste of time, too. Sorry. You just need to envision the finished product, and then map out how to get there.

Or you could always marry some rich chick.

Thumbs up Engine condition

I would say it is based on the condition of the engine.

You have to be really careful with high performance parts period.
They may break on the 100th pass they may break on the the 1st pass,if your 100k engine is in good condition and you plan on going with a mild setup and you keep it tuned properly,it might last another 100k.

Just have a plan like Unit and Wood said.If you do not it is going to drive you up a wall when you start hearing about this part and that part,and it did this,and it did that.

Get to the track and meet and talk to the guys that are going fast,they will usually tell you their ups,and their downs with their combos.

Just try to avoid the newest wonder gadget out there,unless you see it at the track,the track is the real world,not a magazine,not a dyno room,flow bench,but a dragstrip is where you find the fast guys.

what i was thinken of doing is geting the heads and cam and all that and then when i go to install them...after pulling the heads off inspecting it..if it dosnt look good..ill just pull the engine and have it cleaned up and ill get a 331 kit for it...if it looks ok ill install the new heads/cam...if after 10K miles it craps out...ill do the 331...if after 1K miles it craps out...ill do the 331...

your probubly thinken why not just do it to begine with but...after buying heads and cam and all the little stuff for it..i wont have a fat pocket to fork out the cash for a stroker kit and for machine work

Why don't you just save up anyways and do it all at the same time. It will save you alot of headache bro.

Since you know you want a stroker, why not go ahead and do it now instead of waiting for a blown motor to happen?

Just save and do the heads, cam, and stroker at the same time. Then you will REALLY be able to tell the difference LOL.

I agree. Plus you'll save some money by doing everything once, instead of twice. ARP head studs aren't cheap! Plus you've got all your gaskets to replace again. And, it's definitely easier to assemble everything on an engine stand than in your car.

Naturally, you should keep the combo's matched up. Trick Flow heads are probaly going to match up/work best with a Trick flow intake.

will the TFS heads and TFS street intake work alright on a 331...i was thinken of AFR 185's for the 331 but will the street intake choke it?

Thumbs up 331 stroker

with the power you will be making there are a lot of variables to look at.

First off what is the powerband you are looking for...ie you looking to make power from idle to 5500,or from 2500-7000,that is one variable to look at when you buy an intake,Cobra and GT40 intakes are normally good from 1500-5500,the big intakes like the TFS R and the Holley Systemax,you will hit the rev-limiter before you make peak power with one of those monsters.

There are trade-offs like the Eddy Performer and Performer RPM,the TFS Track Heat,and a few others.

Look at your whole package where the cam makes power,what numbers your heads flow at a certain lift,not just peak lift in other words why worry about what the heads flow at .600 if your cam is only a E303.498 lift,see what I am saying?

Get out your pencil and paper,do your homework,look at the Comp Cams website,call up Cam Motion the whole 9 yards.

ill probubly only want to rev it to 5500 mabe 6000

yea theres alot to look at...might take awhile

ill probubly put the TFS heads on my car with a TFS cam then save up for the 331 shortblock
