Post Which heads can I use on my 86 w/stock pistons?

I want to get a set of heads for it but the pistons do not have valve reliefs. Most of the heads I look a have a "will not work on 86" notice. Everything else is stock but I would like to upgrade the lower and the heads soon. If I find something the E6TE's will be up for grabs if anyone needs a matching set of boat anchors.

If I were you I would just swap the short block too..this way you don't have to worry about those pesky flattops ever again. You could pick up a short block used for a decent price, even if it has higher miles on it you're still better off...

I am in Italy so I have to kinda use what I have. Anything that is under 70lbs. shipped is an option. Anyone know if TFS would work? The ads always say that the pistons don't have to be notched.

There is a guy over at StangNet by the name of Thumper460 that sells ported E7's that make real good power that would work on your 86 block. They are relatively cheap (under $500) and if I remember, they flow more and make as good or better power than the PowerHeads do.

I bought the car here from some snapperhead who was getting married for $900. It had a plexiglass t-top on one side, pwr steering leak, mickeymouse exhaust, broken window, 235/60/15 h rated tires and a bunch of other great options. I put alot of work into it and I always do it myself. I didn't know E7's would fit on the block. Are there any others?

Anything more than E7's with a stock cam and you're taking a chance. I'm running E7s right now, have been for about 3 months or so, and its a lot better. Just make sure that you use better valve springs so you don't float the valves. Any heads with bigger valves won't work unless you clay the piston and check it out. Personally I'd go with the e7's for now unless you want to flycut the pistons.

Car craft recently did a 600 HP buildup on a 86 GT 302 they yanked from the boneyard. They detailed grinding in valve reliefs into the flattop pistons. This goes back about 3 months or so. They did the clay marking then drew the pattern on the pistons, and ground out the releifs with a die grinder with the pistons still in the shortblock. The motor survived a 600+ HP NOS shot about 400+ on the motor
