HELP!! C-4 is in, starter won't engage.
Just finishing up a T-5 to C-4 swap. I am using a late model C-4 with small bellhousing, case fill out of a 79 Lincoln(it is not a C-5) I bolted up my stock starter and it like about 1/2" or so engageing the flexplate. I used a 157 tooth 50 ounce imbalance flexplate like everyone said I needed. Everything up to this point far has went together perfect. This is in an 86 GT. Will an AOD starter bolt up to a C-4? Any ideas??? Thanks

I'm trying to remember which starter I had to use on my C4 on my Capri....I'll find out for you. I remember trying a starter for a 1969 Ford Fairlane w/ 302 engine, since that's what the C4 came out of. I couldn't use that starter with my BLOWtech headers I had at the time because of clearance issues. I know, you're all saying, "flowtechs have clearance issues?", right??? http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...board/wink.gif
I THINK I ended up using the stock starter for a 1979 Merc. Capri and it bolted up beautifully. Give it a try! I really don't think the 3524A starter for an AOD will work on a C4, again if I remember correctly. Sorry I can't remember much at 2:00am! http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/frown.gif ------------------ Capri306, Moderator, The Mustang Works Online 1979 Mercury Capri, 5.0L -- C4 -- 2.73 1987 Mustang LX Notch http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net3/wink2.gif <--- New Timeslips |
you will need a starter from an automatic since the snouts are different between the two.

Well I goofed pretty bad!!!!!! I had a big bellhousing all along. There is only 1" difference in width between the small and big bell. Since I thought it was a small bell I ordered the 157 tooth flexplate, it don't work to good in the big bell. I just happened to have a small bell in my bone pile. But now the aluminum dustcover(that goes between tranny bell and motor, behind flexplate.) won't fit. I'm gonna try to go find one tommorrow at the junkyard. If anyone knows which cars came with the small bell it might speed up my search. Thanks a lot!!!!
