Unhappy help FAST PLEASE

I took my car to the local garage to have a scanner put on it to see what codes would come up because the car is not running to well. They spent about 45min on it and then came in and told me that they could not get the computer to communicate with the scanner. but the still charged me for it. i think that is a bunch of shi* but any way my question is what would cause the comuter not to respond they tried two different scanners but nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
the car is an 88lx

on my car (also an 88) the little connector to plug into the scanner was all broken and rotted, check to see if yours is too, thats probably why they couldnt plug it in, i just did some "custom wiring" to get mine to work, good luck with it
