Help finding electrical parts...

1 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, have an electrical problem here. I attached a diagram that is pretty easy to read that will help me to describe. The dark green wire running from the starter relay solenoid is burned in half. The black/orange wire and the yellow/white wire connect to the green wire through fusable links. Both of these wires are cut in several places. I would sauter new wires to the ones coming from the alternator but I'm not an eletrical expert and time is an issue. What are my options? Do I have to replace the whole loom, which raps around the radiator and plugs to the headlights? Is it possible to just replace the junked wires? Where would I go for these parts? Right now, my car is running only on the battery so any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

You can solder new wire where it's cut, just be carefull and make sure you're using the same gauge of wire. Do not use smaller gauge wire period. Get some shrink wrap and overlap a good 1" on both sides of the solder splice, this will ensure a tight connection. Slide the shrink wrap over the wire before you twist the connection, and keep it away while you solder the connection. Once the connection is cool, slide the wrap over the connection and work the soldering iron over to shrink it down.

I would do that, and it doesn't sound that difficult. However, the Ford dealership didn't want to have anything to do with sautering the wires. That makes me think I shouldn't bother either. Are there any places that you guys know of that might have parts like this? Places that have parts from junked cars?

Black wire with Orange stripe, and Yellow wire with white stripe are your main FEEDS to the fuse block.

Iffin you're melting those suckers, you got a problem elsewhere! Fixing the wires will be fixing the results, not the problem. Find/fix the problem, or else put the local Fire Department on speed dial!

This is NOT something to play with. Get the alternator checked first, then start on the fusible links. Check for shorted wires on exhaust/headers etc etc. Don't play with this one bro, we'll lose a Pony if you do!

It's prolly gonna be something simple, but I wouldn't be willing to take the chance. I had one on fire once, and it wasn't pretty. Find out what it is, and FIX it! This is a serious problem, although probably an easy fix. The melted wires are a symptom of the problem, FIND THE PROBLEM, then fix IT, then fix the symptoms.

Wit me? ;)

Second what Jester said. Find the source of the problem first, unless you like your Mustang medium-well done. :D

Also, it's spelled SOLDER, not "sauter."

Thanks for the responses, guys. I mentioned ealier that the car was at the local Ford dealership. They replaced the EEC relay and got it running that way. However, the wires are cut so its just running off the battery.

What happened originally is that I was jumping the car in the cold dead of winter after the car had sat for a month outside. That's when the green wire running off the starter solenoid burned. The wires were cut in an attempted repair. Ford said the EEC relay was corroded and probably caused the wire to burn in the first place. So, I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that the source of the problem is solved and now all I have to do replace the junked wires. The car runs quite well now by the way.

They, Ford that is, did not want to fix the wires. They didn't want to replace them either because they said the parts would be very hard to find and it would cost about 4 hours labor. They advised me to go through a junkyard or find a resto type aftermarket vendor.

Oh, and thanks for the spelling lesson. I told you I'm not a electrical expert...
