help with headers!
hey i need help on deciding what type header to get for my stock 94 gt, already have flows on the back , i need a good set of headers to help out my sound,

I would recommend a set of equal-length ceramic coated shortys. Heddman makes a nice set called torque steps, maybe you've seen them in the magazines. Otherwise, Bassani makes a nice set as well as Dynomax (which is what I ran before the long tubes I have now from Bassani).
Whatever you may end up choosing, I can't stress enough that the HPC or ceramic coating (inside and out) is the way to go for durability and heat dissipation (they cool down quickly for changing plugs, etc.) You'll pay more initially, but if you plan on keeping the car ceramic coating is the only way to go... Hope I was SOME help... |
For a stock (or near stock) application, I would get 1-1/2" (yeah, one-HALF inch) equal length shorties. Easy to install, and really help with the low end torque.
The 1-5/8 are too big for a stock motor IMOHO, and you wont be making enough power top end to offset what you lost donw low. I had the 1-1/2's on mine for a while, and even ran with them on my S-trim... Go small! http://www.dariusrudis.com/mustang/p...l_shorties.jpg |
Who makes 1-1/2 eql length's?

If you ever plan on doing any other mod's in the future I wouldn't get the small diameter headers. If all you want is sound, headers aren't going to make too much difference with a stock h-pipe. I'd suggest gettting an offroad H-pipe or X-pipe. That'll give you, your most sound increase and it'll sound like a beast. But if your set on getting some headers for sound and the best performance potential possible, get some Longtubes. They will offer substantial hp/tq increases over shorty headers, if you ever decide to get some heads.

Im just going longtubes myself because i plan on some n20, but ceramic coated shorties like mentioned above really are nice, and can improve performance, but most of us all know not to go too big on a stock motor. |
The Heddman shorty step-tubes are 1 1/2"- 1 5/8". Probably my choice for a street car. I now have Bassani long tubes stepped with a 1 5/8"- 1 3/4" configuration. Relating to the issue of torque (too big or too small of tube diameter affects this), I previously had the bigger 1 3/4"- 1 7/8" Bassanis. My old headers(which I still have and will take $300 for if anyone is interested) were just plain too big for my current combo, i.e. no torque under 3000 rpm on the street sucks...
To bring my rambling to a close, I believe in staying with a smaller tube diameter to keep torque up, which is critical on a street driven car. Factor in a 100 shot and I still feel the same. Spray a 150 shot or more, or crank out some serious RPMs on top of that and the bigger tubes are necessary. Look at my dyno reading in the users ride section for a good example... It basically comes down to the old saying, "different strokes for different folks." I'm no genius, that's for sure! |
Well if you are installing the headers yourself, I would not recommend equal lengths. What ever you do, don't buy BBK.
|
Anyone else need to go to church the next day after installing BBK equal lengths?:D
Yeah, the headers won't really help it sound nasty unless they are long tubes. Good headers will also help scavenge exhaust gases which will make more power. I'd go with the 1 1/2" diameter if you aren't going to hop up the motor much more. |

hey
thanks for all the replys and help, i think i will go with the 1 5/8 equal shorties, just gotta decide on a brand now , heh
|
Make sure whatever headers you get that they have a one piece flange and have ceramic coating. I have heard different stories with BBK, but I think if I were to get new headers I would get their long tubes ceramic coated. If I were you I would also look into an H or X pipe to install too. It is much easier when you are doing it all at once. You will also love the sound. Hope this helps.

yeh i am gonna go with the mac prochamber h-pipe, so i can install them both together..
