![]() These are the GT-40 heads used on the '93 Cobra and H.O. marine motors. The "GT" should be cast into the head adjacent to the number 1 spark plug hole.
The head was originally designed in 1989 by Ford for the proposed limited edition 25th anniversary Mustang. However, when Ford decided not to produce it, the cast-iron GT-40 heads were used in marine engines and offeredy by SVO until a milled version of the head was standard on the 1993 Cobra (deck-face milled one additional time and machined for additional pushrod clearance). They have 60.6-63.6 cc chamber volumes, and the heads should flow 195 cfm on the intake and 152 cfm on the exhaust at .5 lift (at 28 in. H20) as tested by Super Ford. Hope that helps. --nathan

![]() I'm really not sure on that one. My guess is you have a set of the marine spec heads. If my information is correct, the only difference between the marine head and the cobra head is the additional milling and pushrod clearancing done on the cobra, so it should bolt up just fine. I can't find any references about the thermactor passages in my resources, however.
I'd talk with a builder and see if they can tell you anything. --nathan

![]() I am real sure that you have the '96/early '97 explorer heads. Do they have a casting mark on the ends that looks like 3 vertical lines or bars? If they do, then thats what they are. They could be P heads as well, what are the angles of the spark plugs?

![]() I am clueless on whether these were for a marine application or not, but I do know that these heads came on 96/early97 explorers. They are a GOOD set of heads! They are very sought after with the guys who run a stock eliminator type class. I know several people looking for these heads! You shouldnt have any problems bolting them up.

![]() The 97+ explorer GT-40P heads have 4 vertical bars, the cobra GT-40's have 3 so he has the 93-95 cobras and 96 explorer or the marine heads. mine are the cobra spec and have 3 vertical bars.
Can't explain the lack of smog bumps unless they've been removed by the previous owners unless the marine ones don't have them. I'd check the casting #'s on mine but I don't really feel like pulling off a valve cover.

![]() Do they have the accessory holes drilled at the front and back of the heads? If not then they're definitely marine.
