HELP...Major Problems with new combo!!!

Ok, I just got back from Dallas(600 mile trip to break in heads and cam)

Well, my car just started running like crap. It will be running fine, and then just start missing out of nowhere.

The funny thing is, that if I keep the car moving in gear, let off the gas, and turn the key off, and back on again real quick, it clears up. And then it will start doing it again.

I tried un-plugging the battery, then the computer to reset everything, and after I did that I started it up, and it immediately felt like it lost 40-50 hp...it won't spin at all in 2nd.

I also developed a mysterious ticking/crackleing sound on my passengers side inside the motor somewhere, it is very eratic, not in sync with rpm. It is not an exhaust leak, I think it is a clogged lifter, or something.

Guys PLEASE help, I am desperate. Thank you

Mustangs have been known to have he TFI modules go bad on long trips, but usually in hot weather? mine did this a year ago but cleared up on it's own.

Now the other problem i dont know what that would be? hope you find the problem.

Sounds like your computer is screwed to me. That's just based on an example of the exact same thing that happened on an old 88LX 4 banger I had. Same exact thing. A mechanic I know wacked it with a screwdriver. Damn thing ran perfect. I felt like an idiot. Oh well, that cleared up a problem that I had for months. Incidentally the engine blew up the next day. Tell me that's not ironic?

Anyway, sounds like it's the computer, or another emissions sensor. Otherwise the problem wouldn't go away when the car was shut off and refired rolling down the road.

Still, you said you cleared the computer, let the engine cool off, started it and it lost a bunch of power?

Here are my best guesses.
  • Computer
  • MAF Sensor
  • TFI Module
  • Fuel Pump

Those are just some ideas that I have.

I hate those kinds of problems.

Good Luck!

I suggest a code scanner, just my .2

lol, like unit says, i hate those kind of problems.

To tell you the truth, someting like that has to be one of three things. First of all check all your electrical connections you know(batt, spark plug wires, throttle possition sensor, injector wires), stuff like that. Second try searching for a vaccum leak near the upper intake assuming you havent all ready. The third thing I could tell you is to check the fuel system (the pump, filter, lines both steel and rubber, regulator) and so on. I hope these things will help solve your problem, good luck.

I would agree that it must be computer/sensors. If it goes away when you simply cycle the power, then it sounds a lot like computer. Thats a trick I use when I don't want to stare at that check engine lite, just turn it off and on real quick.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I seriously hope I've got it here. I knew this sounded so familar. ITS IDENTICAL to what happened when I had a plug wire too close to a header and it melted the insulation. AT higher rpm it would jump through the wire to the header and short out, creating this exactly situation.

This might not be it, but check all that stuff out asap!
