Help me to get into the high 11

I have modfied my car once again this year and
put again a lot of money (particularly when you pay in
canadian $) on my car but it seems i am going nowhere.

My goal is to get a high 11sec car, naturally aspirated
and injected 5.0. Below is the list
of what has been modified on the car. Any comments
that can help or any bad feeling about my
setup are welcome.

I was about to buy an edelbrock perf RPM intake, 70mm TB,
drag mufflers and if it is not enough an aluminum flywheel
would it be sufficient?

Thanks a lot for helping

I'd say the RPM intake should put you right there, that Cobra intake is holding you back IMO. You could use a bigger MAF and a 70mm TB too. Long tubes would help you out too, much better torque curve. You do those thing I'd say you'd be in the 11's easy.

Thanks for the reply,

Would it be possible to do it with only the Performer RPM intake
and the 70 mm TB?

Mustang parts cost almost an arm here but if i only need
the TB and Intake, i ll make the swap for sure.

850 $ CAN (Intake)
385 $ CAN (Throttle Body)
100 $ CAN (Spacer)

I would buy a used RPM edelbrock intake and used 70mm TB.

Also if you are running this car N/A Why not go with more gear? Say 4.10.

Everythings else looks good, maybe a dyno tune?

Your almost there, Im shooting for the 11's on motor myself next time out!

Yeah I forgot to mention the gear. I would say with a taller gear(like the 4:10 Skyler mentioned), the RPM intake and the 70mm tb you'd be in the 11's.

If money is a major concern, try checking out some of Trick Flows intakes. They flow just as well if not better than the Edelbrocks but cost a little less.

With your combo, I would expect a better intake to put you in the 11s.

5.0 Mustang and Super Fords just did an intake dyno comparison and they were picking up 15+ hp with the one of the Trick Flow intakes over the Cobra. Plus you'll successfully move your powerband up a few hundred rpms. Your combo will like that.

Do your heads have the 1.9 or 2.02 intake valves?

eatsgmcar 08-01-2002 03:15 PM

I have the 1.9 intake 1.6 Exhaust valves. I know that
the RPM intake give 11.7RWHP over the cobra intake
and the HP peak move from 5500 to 5800 RPM. The trick
flow seem to be better but where is the HP peak?
(the computer s cut off is at 6200 then more HP at higher
RPM is not necessary)

To your opinion, for a 6200 shift point which intake would be the best?

Thanks for helping,

AFR 165's, RPM intake, and a custom cam and your there for sure

Skyman 08-01-2002 07:13 PM

.I think a good tune and some more gear alone will get you there.

Have you played with your timing and fuel pressure much at the track? You are almost there, Id play with the free stuff at the track more.

What RPM are you shifting at? Have you tried playing with shift points? I gained over 1 mph doing that.

Trying the same

Eatgmscar,
I am trying to get into the high 11's daily driver myself,I have studied this subject very well and it is a lot harder than it looks. Skyler is pretty close with his buggy I seen his car run and it is stout,Sky I think you are only a little weight loss and skinny's from a 11,ok enough of the kudos.

You need some gear, period unless you are running nitrous or a blower, you need some gear and I mean 4.10's or possible 4.30's,you got to make that engine work to make some hp,everything looks pretty stout but 4.10's at the least.

eatsgmcar 08-02-2002 12:41 PM

Why more gear? My 60 feet time is always between
1.63s and 1.68s. (I dump the clutch at 4500 RPM)

The other mustang i know do almost the same with
3.73 and 4.10 gear.

Do i have to change the gear to stay in the power band?

thanks for helping
continue to send your comments i am learning a lot....

chris91LX 08-02-2002 01:12 PM

The 60' time is great, but what rpm are you at going through the traps? Ideally you want to be at your peak rpm at the finish line, that means your getting everything out of your motor that you can. The right gear will ensure your at your peak rpm through the traps. That's why everyone is saying you need a gear.

eatsgmcar 08-02-2002 01:21 PM

My trap speed is 109 MPH when the RPM is at 4900-5000 in fourth
gear. I think your right....

thanks,

Skyman 08-02-2002 01:39 PM

Where are you shifting at?

Ideally you should cross the line at 5500rpm.

Skyler

eatsgmcar 08-02-2002 01:48 PM

i shift at 5800,

I was shifting at 6000 but i got better results at 5800.
i have never tried below 5800 cause i am sure i cannot
get a better ET.

I didn't realize you were running 3.55 gears. More gear and you're probably there.

I re-read the article in the 5.0 magazine last night and the TFS Track heat resulted in a gain of 18 HP, but moved the peak power up almost 400 RPMS. With your 3.55 gears, a change in intake may hurt your performance. You won't be in your peak power-band enough.

Have you ever dyno-tuned your car? That's the best way to make sure you're tuned for max performance.

Skyman 08-02-2002 02:22 PM

I gained 1 mph and .12 on my ET Shifting at 5500 instead of 5800 with my E-cam and edelbrock intake on TFS heads.

I would definatly try the lower shift points.

Skyler

eatsgmcar 08-02-2002 02:24 PM

I totally agree with everybody...

However i am running this car on the street and
don t want to have more gear. I ll try to reach the
11 with the 3.55 maybe next year then.

With your messages i know now why i was getting a lot
of mph at the 1/8 mile (88.41mph) and why i only
pick up 20.59mph (normally around 22-23 mph) on the last
eight mile for a trap speed of 109.

Skyman 08-02-2002 02:26 PM

Definatly try the lower shift point and see if you dont gain atleast a tenth.

Have you tried lowering your fuel pressure? 37psi on 30lb injectors is a lot!

SKyler

eatsgmcar 08-02-2002 02:33 PM

thanks for the tips,

i will definitely try to lower my shift point to 5500
next time.

I got the best performance at 37 psi. Even at 44 psi,
no smoke was coming out of the pipe.
