Help My Clear Coat Is Melting
I have a 87 mustang with a fairly nice paint job, but recentley i have noticed that it looks as if water spots are melting into it and the clearcoat looks like it is bubbling, any ideas on what to do. How much does it cost to get it reclear coated. Would it need to be wet sanded?
thanks raini

I doubt the clear coat is actually Melting, that would mean the ratio of hardener to resin was seriously wrong!
Sounds more like the color coat was contaiminated, or poorly prepped. Or the clear coat is not compatible with the color coat. Either way, the clear coat needs to be sanded off, at the least and the clear re-shot properly!! I'm a Urethane Chemist not a body man, but that is my opinion of your problem

The clear coat is not properly bonded with the color coat. This could be caused by a number of reasons. From severe oxidation, to poor prep work, to incompatability between the coats, as mentioned above. It can also be caused by using non-clearcoat safe products on your paint, or spilling of liquids like brake cleaner, fluid, or gasoline onto the surface.
There is no easy fix for the situation that I'm aware of. It will simply get worse and worse until the clear coat is removed, and the car is repainted. If you had it painted by a shop, I suggest contacting them to have them re-do it. |
