Help with pinging at stock timing????
 

I have a problem wit pinging at higer rpm's and my timing is set 10 degrees. Is it a carbon buildup or something else. And i dont want to have to buy octane booster for every tank of gas to solve it if that will work, Any ideas will help me...thanxs

are you absolutely sure its at 10degrees btdc? did you set it with the spout connector pulled out?

also, what octane gas do you run in it?

I use 93 octane all the time and yes the spout connector was pulled out.

Try installing spark plug wire separaters to keep the wires for #5 & #6 from touching each other, all the way from the cap to the plugs.

check the mass air flow sensor/meter (not sure of the name). Its the sensor that is up next to your k&n air filter that is a small black rectangle. Take it out and clean the 3 pronds with some dialectric(sp?) cleaner. You would be surprised how much of a difference it will make if is dirty.

One note of caution:

When cleaning the Mass Air sensor, disconnect the battery first and be careful not to touch the 'hot wire' with your fingers. Use alcohol on a swap (Q-tip) to clean it and be sure to firmly tighten the screws that hold the unit together when you put it back.

ok i will also try that to but i wont be able to give any responses till like monday or so.......but thanxs for all the ideas and are there any other tips i should also try.

I'm betting it's the plug wires allowing a crossfire between #5 & #6. It's always dangerous to have two cylinders that are next to each other be sequential in the firing order, and Ford did this twice! Both of their common firing orders for V8's have this problem.

Do you always buy gas at the same station? If so, wait till you are almost empty and buy a couple of tanks from from another station.

no i go around town when i get gas.
