Help........please
 

Hey guys, I'm new here and to the mustang community. I need some help. First off, I have a 92 lx 5spd, which has been converted from an auto. I just installed a Paxton Novi 2000 and am experiencing some problems. The car feels great when I first get into it, but when it starts to build boost, it throws a code and almost feels as if the timing starts to retard. This all happens around 3800 rpm's. Once I let out, usually to shift, the service light goes out and the car feels fine again. It does this through every gear. I was told by a local here that the computer needed to be changed from an auto to a 5spd. So I swapped it with a friend who has the 9AL manual computer. This did not change anything. It actually feels worse. For what it's worth the car felt great before I put the blower on it. Thank's in advance!

First thing to do is to pick up a code scanner and pull the codes stored on the computer. You can get one for most late model Fords at your local Wal Mart.

Start there, and tell us what you get.

What are your plugs gapped at? If it feels like it stops making power around 3800 (when the boost is starting to build-up) you easily could be blowing out the spark. I've seen it many times.

Try a .040" gap or even .035" to solve the problem. It's a quick and cheap thing to check before you spend alot of money elsewhere.

The scanner is a good idea as well.

THEY'RE ABOUT $35 HERE, I was having the same problem around 4600 on the 95GT. I am going to get a cooler plug and less gap. I also only have the 19lb injectors so fuel might be an issue for me, even with the FMU and 155lph pump.

I was wondering about fuel too. I have stock injectors with fmu and 190lph pump. This really feels strange. It almost feels as if I slowly start applying the brake to the car. The engine doesn't miss though. I will get a scan tool a little later and check the codes. :D

O.K. I purchased a scan tool. Here are the codes that I retreived: #56 Mass Air Flow sensor voltage signal too high or Electronic4-Speed Overdrive Automatic Transaxle: Transmission Oil Temp sensorsignal voltage is too high. #21 Engine coolant temperature sensor signal voltage: out of range, not at normal operating temp
#44 Problems with the Thermactor Air Control System #94 Thermactor Air System- problem on right bank or Transaxle problem-Shift Solenoid circut failure. Do you guys think that any of these tranny codes are caused by the 5spd swap? I now am running a 5spd computer, so I wouldn't think that that is the case. I will look at the plugs tonight.

Your codes were/are:
56 = MAF voltage too high.
21 = ECT out of range.
44 & 94 = Smog pump not working

You never had a transaxle. They are for front wheel drive.

Okay. First of all, did you warm up the engine before you ran the codes? If it wasn't at normal operating temp, it will trigger the ECT code. Very common.

Second, do you still have your smog pump hooked up?

That leaves the code 56. This one is easy. With the key off, disconnect the MAF from the vehicle harness. Start the engine, and allow it to idle for one minute. Turn the key off. Run the KOEO codes again. If this time you get a code 66, your MAF is bad and MUST be replaced. Do this and post the results. If you don't get a code 66, we'll go from there.

Well, last night I did exactly what you said and I got the 66 code. I am going to replace my mass air now. I do have a question. How does that prove that it is bad? Once again, I am not questioning your knowledge, I am questioning mine. I really want to learn the in's and out's of these cars.
