Question which supercharger?

Who is using a supercharger?
I'm looking over the field right now and finding out about them.
Some questions-

-Based on price, performance, ease of installation, which brand do you recommend?

-By how much does performance increase in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times?

-I assume most people are using centrifugal units, but I heard these are most effective only in the + 3K rpm range. Any problems with this? I have a 5 speed, 3.08 gears.

-Anyone using an eaton-type unit?

-Howabout units out of SC T-Birds? Has anyone been able to retrofit this unit? I understand they're great at all rpm!

- And finally, best online source?

Thanks.

I must admit, for the price, I love my Novi 1000. I paid $1,700 for it, and it's worth every penny. I am at 4,100' elevation, and the car picked up 1.1 seconds in the 1/4 with the blower and a set of slicks in this air with the stock pulleys on it. And for $15 more, I was able to bump the boost up fro 4psi to roughly 7-7.5 depending on the weather. For a good message board on blowers, try http://www.superchargerhelp.com/ They have anything from Paxtons, Powerdynes, Vortech, Kenne Bell, and Prochargers.

Have had average luck with Vortech, had to have a rebuild done on a 8psi setup after only 27k miles, only saw maybe 10 passes in 27k miles and regular road driving. I produce 8psi at 5600rpms, she actually kicks in around 3k rpms. Time increase on the 1/4 has yet to be determined, but she feels hella stronger IMO. I would recommend turbo though, you can go single turbo with no intercooler fairly cheap and not put the strain on your crank and also produce full boost all through the rpm range vise building as you go. Either way you go and whatever you choose, remember fuel and spark upgrades are musts with forced air induction, so always add $$ to whatever kit you are looking to purchase, lots of SC kits come with fuel upgrades. Good luck.

Thanks guys.
Chris-
Your power gains were with the 7 psi pulley?
302-
Isn't the turbocharger more difficult to install? Who makes them and how much do they run? Do I need fuel and spark enhancements too?

I think both the installs will be fairly difficult or time consuming. www.proturbokits.com is a good site, give them a call and they will answer your every question. You will need to upgrade you fuel and spark no matter which application you choose.www.proturbokits.com

Actually the basic kit for the Novi 1000 is a 5psi set up, at least with the older generation ones. With my elevation, I was seeing 4psi on a good day. I am now pushing about 7psi on a good day. Most of the guys on the board with my same setup are seeing close to 10psi maybe a little more. I am hindered with the thin, hot air in the summer with it being over 100* all the time. If I had it to do all over again, I would go with either an intercooled Procharger, or an intercooled turbo.

Not really, plus it solves your need for exhaust

Yes, you will need fuel and spark.

Stick with a Novi 1000 or any used setup under $2k. A Kenne Bell would rock on a daily driven application, but they are about as pricey as a turbo setup with less power.

I say if you want that whining sound from under the hood, go with the Novi. If you got a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket,...go with a turbo, but be ready to spend more money on tuning that turbo kit if you do.
I would stay away from Procharger! I got no help from Procharger or the dealer I bought it from. (Big mail order company in Kansas)
Spent over 5,000 dollars and got shyte!!! So F... Them!!!!!!
Went back to spray and never looked back.
Thats my story.
Good luck with yours.

Yep, Prochargers QC sucks. I have seen it firsthand many times.

The NOVI1000 like everyone has suggested is a real good entry level blower. I'd suggest that, or a Vortech S trim. Thats gonna be more money though.

The factory ignition system will work fine for 7-8 pounds of boost. You will want to upgrade your fuel system though, depending on what kit you end up with.

I'm getting it now.
So- If I go with entry level and keep boost modest, stock ignition is fine. Stock injectors are 19lb, right? Will I have driveability problems if I stick with them?
And finally, as far as used goes, what should I be wary of?

If you stick with the entry level, driveability should be nice. Also stock injectors are 19lb.
As goes for buying a used blower, I personally would buy only new, unless I know the person selling it.
If you but it new, you get the warranty and should get first class service from the dealer, if any problems were to rise. If you buy it from the guy down the street you are kind of on your own. So its at your discretion.
Good luck

So in another word, if you don't already know what to look for, then buy it new.

Probably the best advice. It doesn't look like there's much money to be saved going used anyway....

Yeah, it might be kinda hard to find a complete used kit anyway. I think most people just upgrade their head units.

The best upgrade you could make to your blower is something to tune with. FMU's suck, and chips arent boost sensitive. I'd look for a used PMS and a set of 30 pound injectors.

Hey, I love my FMU

Just make sure it is on correctly......

Entry level and keep boost modest, stock ignition is fine. - Yes

Stock injectors are 19lb, right? - Yes

Will I have driveability problems if I stick with them? - Not as long as you have the FMU set correctly.

As far as used goes, what should I be wary of? - Beat to death, incomplete kits, people you dont know. Get new, you be happier.

For Comparision, guy came to the track this year with a STOCK 5.0 MTX and a NOVI 1000. All, and I mean all, he had done was a track heat intake and the NOVI. He was trapping 107MPH. That is a 12 MPH increase over stock (95)

It's an EFI intake for the Mustangs made by TFS. Look it up in a Summit catalog or go on line for details. www.summitracing.com

Of course with a forced induction setup, i would recommend the R type series of the intake rather than the street heat. I am running the black street heat on our 95 SC mustang and wish I would have gone with something else, but hey...it looks real nice in there.
