Help tuning carb!!!

ok heres the deal, when i bought this car, it was a stock 5.0, with wiend intake and a holly 600cfm carb, i dont know if the jets have been changed, but since then i have added all the mods below. When im cruising in 5th gear and give the car a little gas to accelerate, it hesitates then goes and i can smell gasoline, and when i rev the car up from idle, it hesitates also, that leads me to think that i am flooding the engine. I dont know wht size jets are in the car, but im planning on buying some new ones and a new power valve, any suggestinos? Also, sometimes when i rev up a little, no too high, it pops a little in the intake, could this be from too much fuel, my cam does have overlap, or is it just timing related, i cant remember what i set it at, but im going to play with that tommorow. any help or suggestions are appretiated
thnx

90% of the time, an off-idle hesitation is due to a lack of fuel. Specifically, a problem with the accelerator pump circuit. You need to verify the pump setting, and make sure that there is fuel exiting the squirters at the slightest touch of the throttle. What color accelerator pump cam are you using, and which hole is the screw in?

Take care,

Power bake in the street then turn your car off immediately pull a plug and if it is a dry white color your lean and if its wet looking your rich, at least thats what my brother does Lol:D

what type of 600? double pumper or Vac. secondaries?

bosco 01-21-2002 01:06 PM

ok lets see, Dark Knight, its a 600cfm with vacuum secondaries. one of the holley 4160 seriese if that helps, and PKRWUD, i do appologize, but your going to have to run that one by me again, a little over my head, i was just outside and let it run for a few minutes, checked the squirters and they squirt when i jsut barely nudge the throttle, but as for the color accelarator pump cam, everything is that old bronze color

well.. 1st off... try to tighten down the the nut for the acc. pump on the primary side untill the pump arm has the most travel...I had to tighten the nut on mine aways to get the most travel....but no slop in the linkage.. as for the Acc. pump cam.. if you look on the throttle linkage on the carb.. there is a screw, the 2 holes are numbered... mine worked the best with a black cam on the #1 hole... the cam assortment is only a few bucks...
a few things you might want to get for the carb if you havent is the quick change secondary spring kit and the conversion to jets on the secondary side... that way you can change the jetting all the way around....

also... make sure the float level isnt to high and check the timing..
both of those could cause probs too ;-)

whew... ;-)

oh yeah... open or 4 hole spacer?

I think you would be better served using the red #330 cam, but it's all about experimenting. below are some pics to show you what to expect. I'll use the 330 cam for an example.

this picture shows where the cam goes from underneath.

The red #330 cam has 3 holes for adjustment. I recommend using the #3 hole.

Here you can see the two holes in the throttle linkage where the screw goes to hold the accelerator pump cam in place. I recommend hole #2. if you look closely, you can see that hole #2 on the linkage and hole #3 on the cam are now lined up for the screw.

This is what it will look like when you are finished installing the cam. You now need to adjust the spring tension on the lever. I can add more pics if you need them.

Take care,

you can also see the screw to adjust the acc pump arm...mine had alot of travel left the way it came...
also... get a vacum gauge too... and get a power valve thats roughly half of the idle vacum..
another thing you might try is running it without the spacer...some intakes work good with them, some dont..

Thanks alot guys, that helped alot. It looks like i have the white cam and its in the 1st hole. The spacer is open, not the 4 hole. I wont get around to really messing with the carb too much untill this weekend, but ill keep ya posted,

dual plane intake? or single?
questions questions... hahaha

bosco 01-22-2002 12:13 PM

hehe no prob, its a dual plane, wiend stealth i believe

Dark Knight 01-22-2002 12:17 PM

try a 4 hole... bet that would make a big difference...kinda trying to make a dual plane intake think it's a single plane... or no spacer... easier than messing with the carb to start

bosco 01-22-2002 12:21 PM

yea that makes secne, i can see why it would be a good idea to have a 4 hole with a dual plane, i might just try taking it off for now, and if its to big of a difference, then ill try a 4 hole. The spacer is for torque right? if so, my 3.73's should help colver that up a little bit

Dark Knight 01-23-2002 11:01 AM

a 4-hole gives the carb a better signal.. you should get better throttle response... an open spacer on a single plane increases the plenum volume.... picks up the top end... ;-)

What kind/brand of throttle cable bracket do y'all use? It looks like the original 83-85 OEM brackets aren't available any more. The OEM would have bolted directly to the Stealth intake. What do you use for return spring brackets?

Dark Knight 01-23-2002 11:58 AM

I still have the stock bracket... but from what I remember on the carb stang mailing list... something like the moroso bracket that mounts under the carb works great... all you have to do is grind the little tab off the throttle cable...

might look through the archives ;-)
