Question Why do I see some high performance engines w/ breather caps on the oil spout??????

Why, in the magazines, do I see breather caps on higher performance 5.0's and 351's instead of oil caps?? What does the breather cap do? Can I use it as a replacement of the PCV system? Will the engine run without the PCV? I'm really trying hard to avoid removing my lower intake to install the baffle plate, if possible.
