Angry Backfire

Over the last 2 days my car has been backfiring under part throttle under load. When in neutral there is a miss when revved high. My fuel pressure is at 38psi with vacuum line off, timing at 10 degrees. I have cats, long tubes. Had an annoying small leak that was like a ticking sound before. Could the backfiring be caused by this?

My plugs all looked good, tan colour. I don't know how to check plug wires, so that could be a problem, but they all look good.

Any suggestions?

Here's how to check for bad plug wires (arcing). Find a real dark place. Open you hood and let the engine idle. Look for a glow around your engine...that's arcing. Also, you could try spraying misted water around the engine where the plug wires are. Careful.

Put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and it seems to help. The old wires never glowed or anything like that...

Could it be anything else? I don't want to have to change plugs every two months...

Broken or failing fuel injector.

Is the ticking sound an exhaust leak? I had an exhaust leak on my 92GT( flows with off-road h-pipe and 6# blower)and when I let off the gas or decelerated, every now and then it would have a huge backfire. I mean it sounded like a grenade went off under the car. I found the flange on the pipe to the hedder had a small gap and that caused the backfiring. I sealed it up and it went away.

Unit, how would I go about having them checked? They're only a couple months old, and are ford 24#ers.

As an updated, there is no major backfire any more and it seems to run a lot smoother. I still have that annoying exhaust leak, and it only sounded like a grenade once last night when I drove it hard.
