Question HO cam profile and flat lifters?

I have a old 5.0L EFI engine that I have had wired with HO MAP computer and uses HO injectors and HO intake.

Can I use the HO cam profile on a standard (firing order) cam with the standard flat lifters or do I need roller lifters?

I'm not quite sure i'm clear on what your asking but I think you want to know if you can use an H.O. cam or if a flat tappet cam and lifters would work. If you use an H.O. cam then you should use the roller lifters, although its not a wild cam I think the ramp rates are too steep for a flat tappet. I'm sure you could use a flat tappet cam with matching lifters if you so desire as well. As far as firing order, use whichever firing order the cam is made for.

I hope this answers your question. If I missed what you were asking, i'm sorry .

Lx5Liter is exactly right. You can (I have) use a non-HO cam with flat tappet lifters with no problems as long as you use the non-HO firing order with the cam (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8). If you use the HO cam and roller lifters, then you'd use the HO firing order.

Thanks fellas,

I think the 'ramp rate' is the bit I needed to know.

I was kinda confused too, but if you are asking if it's okay to use flat lifters with a roller cam, the answer is no.

BTW, I lived in Perth for a little while back in 1986 (I think, maybe '85). Actually, I lived in Cloverdale, but you get the idea. I worked at Bunnings. Great place, Perth! Loved it there!

Take care,
-Chris

Yeah Perth rocks in its own little way :>

Sorry about the vague question, you all pick out the bits I need to know. TA.

So if I cant use a cam that has HO profile because the ram rate is too great can anyone tell me what is the greatest cam profile that I can use in an engine with flat tappets?

(Im using a EEC-IV speed density computer)

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to stick to the standard firing order? If you have all HO stuff, why not just buy an HO cam and use the roller lifters along with the HO firing order? You should probably get a MAF computer, too.

THe short story: This is Perth, have alook on the map, it really far from the USA!

Relaible sources for part and information are hard to come across and really really expensive.

But I can understand why you ask.

I went to Sydney on my honeymoon. I remember it took a long time to just get there.

I was just wondering if you were under the common misconception that you need to change the crank or something to change to a different firing order.

As far as information goes, all of the manufacturers here have email and they are pretty good about getting back to you. You also have us, of course. You could get your parts from www.summitracing.com. They ship internationally. I don't know what shipping would be, though.

This illustrated the problem Im against in little old Perth here.

You all can get a cam and lifters for $100 US

To by the same Crane cam without lifters is $500-$600 AU

Thank you jimberg for the link.
