Default Horse Power All At Once

I was just thinking.. you can keep adding stuff along the way and finaly get to your goal ET... but I would imagine it's probabaly easiest to do it all at once.. if you're going to take down your engine, might as well do the whole deal.

Ive got my 89 GT Convertible... so that means it's heavy, and I'm not lightweight either, plus it's AOD. But I've always wanted a 12 second car..... and I mean 12.1, not so much 12.9. I figure I might as well just DO it... I've got a job, so I can afford stuff.. within reason. lets say I took 3000$ would that get me everything I needed for a 12 second car assuming I could do all the work, with exception of machine work. but breaking down the motor and stuff like that. Can this be done on the stock short block leaving the engine in the car? Lets leave suspension out of this for the time being. To complicate things.. this is also a daily driver. I HAVE another car, but I would like to drive this one as much as possible.

I would imagine I would need at the bare minimum:
Intake (TFS Track Heat?)
Heads/1.7 Roller Rockers (Twisted Wedge/Scorpion)
Cam (?)
Fuel Pump (190?)
Adj FPR
Mass Air Meter (Some Larger Diameter)
Throttle Body (Some Larger Diameter)

What I have:
O/R H Pipe, BBK Unequals, Flowmasters
3.73 Gears

I know everyone's going to have thier idea on how to get there.. I wanna hear what everyone has to say..

1.you can't do a rebuild with the engine in the car.
2. 3000 worth of stuff didn't get me into the 12's.
Here's what I did during my Summer vacation:
306 w/ 9.4:1 TRW's, all new ARP fasteners, rods and main bolts. entire rotating assembly balanced. Total seal gapless rings, Ported stock E7 heads (new guides and keepers too), new valves, springs, FMS roller rockers, F303, ARP Gorilla oil pump drive (don't leave home without one) TFS track heat intake, BBK 70mm TB and EGR spacer, Pro-M 77 mm mass air meter, 24# inj., BBK adjustable FP regulator, BBK long tubes with off road H-pipe, Flowmaster American Thunder 2 chamber exhaust, 3:73's and an aluminum driveshaft. It's overinjected for now and it STILL won't hit 12's.
This was on my oldest son's 89 GT and in reality some of the stuff was done over the last year but the engine was a project we had a lot of fun with. I have no idea what we both spent on the engine but it was more than $3500 and less than $4500. That. . . is before the intake and all the associated pieces parts. Intake, TB, Mass air, injectors and the like went over a grand alone. And we did everything here at home but the machine work. He has plans for some heads next as this is an evolutionary project that is at the mercy of his finances but it's gettin there. After that, he says it's blower time. He tells me we'll be doing that installation sometime this Summer. I can't wait.
Back to your question, I'm probably doing something wrong but I don't see 3000 bucks getting into the 12's with the 302 you're going to use. I hope you do, and maybe you will, but the experience I've had with this one hasn't produced it yet. I didn't expect it to but still.

Fair enough... I just picked 3000 at random.. I COULD spend more.. I just wanted to imply a reasonable limit...

I certainly wouldnt REBUILD a motor with it in the car.. I just meant if you're going to pull heads and cams and intakes. might as well do it all at once... rather thne pulling the intake again later to do a cam or something else... though without pulling the engine to have it REBUILT can you get 12s with the stock bottom end?

Afr 165's
Holley systemax intake
65mm TB
Long tube headers
X-pipe
shift kit
stall converter
4.30 gears
slicks

and dont even get me started on suspension for a drag vert.

Default hmmmm...

Not to discourage you but....

My blower setup alone just came in at a little over $4500...
Sq-Trim
90 mm Lightning MAF
42#'s
Power pipe
Anderson chip

I don't think anybody would do any thing if they really knew how much it costs.

But then you hit the gas and its all worthwhile.

Oh yeah, drop tops are sooo worth it too. Even if they weigh 136 lbs more....

The stock bottom end (as per a certain mustang magazine) would be able to take up to a 250 shot of nitrous. And that is if you really know what you are doing and putting it to the extreme. So, YES you can build a 12 sec "motor" based on stock bottom end.

12.40's with unported GT-40 heads (only milled 0.030"), and E303 cam, Pacesetter H-pipe with Flowmaster 2-chambers and a GT-40 intake. This was on 8.5-15 E/T Drags. There were other smaller things like a 75mm Bullet MAS and 65mm TB too. $3000 should get you well into the 12's.

See what it took me to outfit a 32K original mile S-trim motor with TFS heads/cam/intake/headers...

I guess I should add a disclaimer here. Sorry, I misunderstood the part about doin the "in the car" thing. I agree, once you go that far, might as well go for the whole enchalade. $3,000 won't get you into the 12's where I live. Mostly due to the altitude but 12's are blower territory around here.

You can go 11's with a stock bottom. Im planning on being in the 11's soon with my car, all motor 306 with stock bottom with polished and shot peened rods. A friend of mine has been a 11.5 with a stock bottom with the exception of some eagle I beam rods. He has...

302
canfield heads
holley systemax
x-cam
1.7's
c-4 2800 stall
4.10s
and all the bolt ons

Im plannig on being well in the 11's with my AFR's and either a Systemax or the new rpm intake.

hope this helps

Forgive the bad pictures but this is the only race the 89 has had since the latest motor I detailed earlier. This was about three months ago and the lights went fubar before either car hit the end of the trrack. Third gear gave it up during the next race so I really don't know what it ran. Best times before the last go-round was high 14's at about 96-98. I guess I'm gonna have to go back this spring to check, but I don't think it's anywhere near 12's

HAHAHAA, Kill the vette.
Yeah, I would love to dip my cars below low 15's, or whatever it runs stock. It is also an Auto Vert, but you can't count us out as being terribly slower than you hatch/notch guys. Being an auto and a vert does not necessarily kill all performance. Wow,

Is that all that you had done to the motor??? Thats awesome. Anyway, while we are on the topic. What do u guys think a set of GT-40's would do for me?? My car is completely stock, cept for MAC Cold Air, and K&N. Goood Luck

I'ld say more on suspention less on motor.

Subframe connectors lower control arms gears 4:10's new converter and then Slicks and N2o to go

the more you spend on motor the more your suspention helps.

on my street car ive picked up more with the suspention lately than with trying to get more ponies

also when do you need a cage with a vert 11.99 ????
think about that when choising how fast or what suspention need to be done.

as far as motor the street motor in my car about $3000.00 ballpark 74 351 69.99 scat crank on sale $500.00 302 pistons from swapmeet $100.00 heads 69 351 lots of rolls and carbide tips $100.00 2 turbos from pick a part $50.00 on sale. 50 hours making my own manifold from 351 lower and 302 upper from pick a part $19.00 plus Amber being mad at me priceless.

Exhaust from diesel shop about $200.00 plus welding of intercooler another $200.00

cluthes flywheel balancer scatershield cage other stuff Ive had to get to run at the track i dont even want to think about it.

Garage engine waiting for cam and intake lower choice about $7000.00 and $3000. for the jericho that will live behid it.
