i have set up 2 ford rear ends and all i had to do was use the same shim on the pinion(new shim , same thickness) as was already on there (using fms gears) . the play worked out to be .008 , the other thing that you must check is the mesh pattern which is done by inking up the teeth on the ring gear , then spinning it around 1 rotation and you can see where the teeth are making contact , you want it to be as close to the middle of the tooth as possible . the 2 that i did were perfect just using a .02 shim on the pinion and that's it , ford motorsport gears are awesome ! i have also done 2 gm rear ends which are slightly different and it took a bit more work to get them right .
