Sounds like you figured it out. But, yes, you need to push the axles in so that it exposes the c-clips. I don't remember needing to use a hammer though. Mine just pushed in real easy. After they are pushed in, I just used a standard Craftsman needle nose plyers to gently grab them and pull them out.
