Allthough neutral slams are fun, it is deffinately not the way to go if you plan on keeping the aod in the car for any length of time. When i bought my car it still had the stock aod in it and it was definately coming to the end of its life span. I already had another rebuilt aod ready to go into the car so i decided to finish the stock one off. After I recieved the rebuilt tranny, i neutral slammed the old one every time i raced it. It lasted a little less than 2 weeks.
When launching your aod mash the brakes and apply power until the car is just about to break loose and move. practice a little and you'll know at about what rpm it tries to break loose. when the light turns, take your foot off the break and plant your foot firmly in the gas. Pretty much what tireburner said above.
