how to go fast?

I was just wondering how exactly do yu make a car go fast???

When i say fast i dont mean like 15o MPH i want it to have mroe top speed then the new vettes.....

Do you just make your engien rev alot higher???

If so how do oyu do this without breaking everything?

If not any ideas?

I imagine gears as well but whne oyu allready have the lowest gears what else can be done?

Nic92LXConv50 01-06-2002 11:29 AM

Aerodynamics and horsepower.

vetteeatr 01-06-2002 11:34 AM

I kidna figured that but i mean liek shoudl th motro be built for higher RPM horsepower to push through?

If so what kinda numbers do I need to reach around 180 with 3.73 gears?

Or wiht eh 2.73?

Nic92LXConv50 01-06-2002 12:00 PM

With 3.73's you're going to be spinning the motor to about 9000 rpm at that kind of speed. The 2.73's will bring it back down to a more realistic 7000 rpm. A T56 will bring those numbers down dramatically. You could get away with running a 3.73 in the rear and still be turning the motor under 7000 rpm at 180 mph. This would be my choice if I were to try and run 180 mph in a Mustang.

Go into the analyzer section and there is a top speed calculator. No it doesn't tell you how much power you need to run that fast, but it will tell you what the rpm would be with any gear and what mph you would be running.

No you don't have to build a motor that will spin high rpm's to reach your goal. It's both a balance of power and gear. The motor will have to have the power to keep pulling at the speeds you've mentioned, no matter if it's shifted at 5000 rpm or 8000 rpm.

vetteeatr 01-06-2002 05:16 PM

What i meant was shoudl i make the upper power int eh higher RPM since im nto gonna be going 180 anywehre near 3000 rpm

So whoudl i make my powerband liek from 4000 to 8000?

if you're talking about the t-56 top gear (6) vs. the t-5 top gear (5), you'll see no difference. the ratios are almost identical, the t-56 just adds another gear in the range (between 4 and top).

Where the heck are you going to do 180 at? Your going to die/or be in jail, if you want to do that on the highway or street. And I know your not going to be trapping 180 in the 1/4. If your really wanting to do 180, YOU NEED a hardcore roll cage(not going to save you anyway, but...), 180 mph rated tires, brakes, etc..etc... I could go on forever. Have you seen a high speed (150+)crash? They are nasty....180 is going to be pretty hard to accomplish in your stang without ALOT of cash.

actualyl i want to just beat this guy I knows 94 formula with a 6 spd cuase hes to cocky and needs beat down in evrey area cuase 1/4 mile isnt enoguh for him he needs to know i own him in every way

Put your pride to the side, it isn't worth it. Before I spent enough money to run to 180 mph with him, I would spend it on beating him to 100 to 120 by enough car lengths and tell him it just wouldn't be a good race to 180 because you had so many car lengths on him by 100, imagine how bad it would have been to 180. And if this guy is running those speeds regularly on public roads, give it a little while, he want be around to run with you anymore.

tireburner163 01-07-2002 11:03 AM

Going to 180 on public roads is both dangerous and very, very stupid.

Geting your car(BTW what kind of car do you have) to do 180 will take a LOT of money. You will need a lot more HP, but before you even thing about souping up the engine you will have to do saftey stuff. At least a 8-point roll cage(like it will even help at that speed:rolleyes:, it just make it easier to find the body), 5-point harnesses, ZR rated tires, a drive shaft loop, and of course brakes(ask some of the people here who have tried to stop from like 150 with stock brakes, they fade almost instantly), and the list goes on and on.

Why not just try to beat your friend to 100 or 110, there is no need to race to 180. What are you gonna do if your doin 180 and a car pulls out in front of you, or you blow a tire. BTW a 94 firebird formula won't do anywhere close to 180, and it takes a new Vette a LONG time to get to 180.

vetteeatr 01-07-2002 11:29 AM

What will teh formulas top out at liek 165?

I have a 88 GT

Subframe connectors
and abotu 300 Horses but about to bump that number up quite a bit to near 400 hopefully

I will do some mods to the mustang of course to go that quick

I can beat him alot fast but that means steeper gears which means if he want to actually race me higher i wont be able to be anywhere near him

If im at liek 400 horses at 6000 RPM with 3.73 gears
what woudl i be going or can i push through wiht hat much power or do i need more

I assuem not since thats mroe then teh vette

1BAD89 01-07-2002 11:47 AM

A 1994 formula will top out around 150-155, no way a real a 165 without some major mod's.

Jeb_Bush_2000 01-07-2002 01:00 PM

I can think of maybe a dozen places in the entire country where you can go 180mph...and none are in Illinois. I'll be sure to save the news blurb about your car disentegrating.

A friend of mine died recently in a car accident. She was going 45 in a 50 when she hit a semi head-on. The closing speed was only around 100mph, yet the majority of her car was underneath the drive wheels of the truck. Imagine what an impact at 180mph would be like.

Please do us a favor and try not to hurt anyone else when you remove yourself from the gene pool.

You said earlier it was a 94' Formula. It has the LT1 with 275 hp and probably only puts down about 240 rwhp give or take, unless he's modded. If you've got 300, and just out of curiosity, how do you know that, you should already be killing him. Do us a favor man, give up on the idea of running that fast on public roads. Put about 10 car lengths on him to 100 mph, and then declare yourself the winner. Surely he would know if you had by 10 at 100 mph, how bad it's going to be by 150mph or beyond.

joegodfrey 01-07-2002 05:40 PM

You won't get up to 180 with 400 horse, I don't care what tranny you get. The best way to make you car go faster is aerodynamics, if you decrease your drag coefficient, you go faster. Your mustang was not made to go that fast, therefore you would need to put gobs of power to the ground to get to those speeds. But even if you do get to 180 you risk losing control of your vehicle. It might even lift off the road, which would be fun for no one.

I was talking about 4th gear with the t-5 vs 5th gear in the t-56...you'd have to be making some insane power to be able to reach top speed in overdrive.

1BAD89 01-07-2002 06:14 PM

Suspension plays a big part also. To give you an idea of top speed, a guy has a twin turbo 00' Z28 6-speed with 650rwhp, he also has 3:73's and tops out at 186mph. That's insane hp, and the car is pretty aerodynamic. 180mph is fast, one blink your toast. On a bike it's fast, in a car on the streets it's nuts.

1Bad89, sorry the post look alike. I didn't even read any of the posts before I replied. I guess great minds think alike, or in this case dim-wits. LOL j/k:D
