How many qts have you put in all together? You said you filled it to about 1/2? Are you saying, that you only used a 1/2 qt? (it's early for me on a Sunday morning, so I can't think really well, just yet...
)
If you know the tranny is dry, or about how much trans fluid you already put in, just put in, like, 2 or 3 qts (or as much as you can) and crank the car, just (with the help of someone else) be ready with your funnel to start filling the rest of the tranny while the car is at idle--- that is if it idles perfectly on it's first crank
