How much HP does a stock 460 make?

Ok my dad found a 91 4-banger for cheap and we were toying around with the idea of droping in a 460 and making a drag car. We can get the 460/C-6 trans for cheap. The engine is a 1976. Do any of you guys know what the horsepower ratings on these engine were?

not a fan of the 460..there are 2 basic types of 460powered mustangs..the ones that sound like they go 10's but really go high 13's and the ones that actally go 10's..it cost 2x as much as opposed to a 351 or 302..i would do a 351..you have to get everything from new anyways so the exhaust/oilpan etc.. wont be a concern

the stock HP isnt that high on those years... but you CAN build them to make alot of torque... 500 ft/lbs is pretty easy.. a set of early heads, mild cam and headers... and it's a bolt in..

the only way you'll make more power with a small block is with a blower or N20...and you can put those on the big block too ;-)

Big cubes, small HP

Depends on what Ford vehicle the 460 came out of but 1976 was in the emission-choked, anti-HP era and most 460's are rated in the low 200 HP range, especially the Lincolns. Mostly used now as a boat anchor but anything is possible with the right parts and some imagination.

Ford Racing offers the 'Cobra Jet' aluminum heads for the 429/460 for about $1100. You can get cams, intakes and exhaust parts too that will bring up the HP and of course, increase the already-huge torque on the 460. Motor mounts and other parts needed for installing the 460 in a Mustang are also available.

Big investment but so is any drag car, even with a free car and engine. Might be worth the experience but I would look at a 351, too.

The engine is in a Mercury grand markee, I think. Like I said we are just toying with the idea. A big-block would make a lot of torque. I thinking about throwing on a set of early 429 heads, cam, intake, headers, and spraying it(forged pistons of course) They want $500 bucks for the whole car(the one with the 460).

This is a build up on a VERY tight buget. No aftermarket heads, or blowers. I just don't see how a 351 could be faster than a 460

I say go for it... build a low RPM, high torque engine..you'll never have to spin it over 5500 rpm.... it'll live forever ;-)

tireburner163 01-21-2002 03:44 PM

What I'm saying is that, the 460 will make more power than a 302 or 351 on the buget that I have.

A 302 is pretty cheap to make go fast. I mean even a stock 302 on juice will probably give your 460 a run for the money. Plus think of all that weight in the front end. The car will not handle well.

The Torque would be awesome, but I'd probably go for a 351 or 302.

I checked out some sites last year about stock ratings for a four barrel 460, a 1970 460 supposedely made 360 hp/480 ftlbs torque. I'm beefing up a 1970 429 to put in my 86 mustang GT now. You can get the oil pan/oil pump and hooker headers out of Jeg's to swap it into a fox body mustang. The headers go for around $360 and the oil pan/pump will cost you a little under $200 I think. You can get regular style motor mounts from a few places out of most of the new mustang magazines, or you could get a motor plate kit from D&D Automotive Specialities. Depending on what valve covors you use, you may need to convert to manual brakes. I'm not sure about the power steering yet, I may go with a Flaming River manual rack, but you could probably mount up a pump with the right brackets. The drive shaft may need to be shortened and you should definitely tie the frame with a set of full length subframe connectors.

With the same mods a 460 will be faster. Plus what if I spray theh 460(which I plan on doing), it will leave a 302 in the dust. And I'm not worried about handleing, all it has to do is go in a straight line.

A 460 with no aftermarket aluminum heads is going to be a HEAVY BEAST. I bet it would be easier cheaper to just put a carbed 302/351/3**.... in it. I don't think you realize how much heavier a Big Block with stock heads is then a Small Block. I don't see how a 460 build up can be had on a VERY tight budget.:( Especially if your going to spray it.

A stock 460 is about 750 lbs. The 76 made around 230 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque. If you get the early 429 heads you will gain alot of power. The 1970 429 was 360 hp 480 ft lbs. The 460 was 500 ft lbs. If you get aluminum heads/intake/wp you would probably be in the 600 lb range which is liveable. A 351 weighs about 550 lb and a 302 460 lbs.

429mustang have you done your swap yet? I heard that the hooker headers did not fit well and poor quality. Also I heard The mount #'s that hooker lists one half is obsolete. Just woundering cause I am about to do the swap.

I'm not afraid of the weight for the power increase:D

I say go for it! Be different. Everybody and thier mother is running a small block mustang, drop a 460 in thier by all means, and good luck...it should run really good with the mods you have planned.

Hum 460 Cubes

I personally like the 460 and actually toyed with this idea my self. After asking and answering alot of questions I decided not too, cost wasn't the biggest but it was a factor. Weight and streetabilty emmissions and many other factors weighed together to sour the idea.
You will need a conversion set-up, these are about $1000.00 just to convert.
Now you will be able to get a honest 275-300 ponies with stock heads, but be careful when porting or at least have a pro do this for you. It is real easy to screw the heads up especially on the exhaust side. If not get a set of Dove castings EBAY is a good source for these, in rebuilt condition, expect to pay some good money, but these heads with a mild 550 lift cam and a good intake will mek around 350 ponies and around 475-500 pounds of torque.
Remember one thing cubic inches rule. But only if they produce, multiple horse power per inch. Lets try 1:1 first they go up.. There is always Nitrous,if the old tried and true don't work...
Have fun, and send me some pictures and time slips..

Mac..

I haven't swapped my 429 in yet, it's still at the machine shop. I'm waiting until I have enough money to get a set of Super Cobrajet Heads, and possibly a 514 stroker kit. As far as headers, I'm not sure where I'll get them from, I may get them from D&D Auto Specialties.
