Question How much money to build a high 10 sec Honda (using V-tec engine)?

Okay, I'm not asking b/c I want to do this. I'm just curious. If you've just got to know why, then ask.

I figure far over $10,000. It's not like I've sat down and tried to figure it out.

Depends if your going to gut it, or run a full weight car. And what chassis? The CRX is light.

Default oops, forgot bout weight...

Okay, let's say a Honda Civic EX (coup) 2-door. MINOR weight reductions-- not gutted.

Power adder: Turbo (either single or twin) or Nitrous

Major points: We need transmission, engine and accessories, gears, suspension, and power adder. (and of course driving experiences, but...). I guess we could add labor?

Car craft did a 500 hp Honda buildup vs a 500 hp Buick 455 buildup. Seem to remember the Honda costing over 10,000 for the motor and NOS. And the buick motor was $4000 or so, and even was faster at the strip, neither car was in the 10's

I saw a CRX run a high 12 next to me, I made myself feel better thinking how much he spent to get there.

For that matter, wouldn't a 10 sec Stang cost some good coin too??

Almost a moot point....Fast Honda? never seen one except a few motorcycles. I hear those quick imports are all the rage on the west coast.Probably isn't one within 100 miles of hear that will break into the 13's.But I have a friend who digs that crap and he says 10,000 probably wouldn't touch it cuz even if you make all that power it takes mucho dollars to put it on the ground. The bone yards are littered with broken half shafts, those cars are a waste of time and money, even a quick one bores me to sleep.Only bikes should have 4cyls. My bike puts out more hp than my mustang and it also wieghs only about 400 lbs. But she will go 5.80's on motor(1/8) and 5.50's on the button. Don't do much 1/4 mile but I have gone 9.10's on motor and 8.70's on the button. It is quite a ride with no wheelie bars!
Almost 270 hp when she is on the squeeze.(last dyno)

as for the 10 second mustang lets see:

beat up old 4 cyl car:300-800 dollars
big block/c6 out of early 70's ford 600-1000
new intake, cam ,carb, 800-1000
N.O.S. fogger 500-800
a little suspension work
removing all uneeded wieght
slicks
stall converter
race shifter
roll cage

I lost count and this isn't exact science but I bet you could put one in the 10's for just a tick under 6 grand if you pinched your pennies. And for 10 grand you could build one hell of a nice drag car

The fast V-tec engines are not really V-tec at all.

You fix it to whare the extra valves are woirking all the time instead of waiting for the v-tec to open them.

Then you drop in an agressive cams. and ultra high compression around 13-14 to 1. You will have to go to a 4 throttle body set-up 1 for each cylinder. As well as have extensive porting on the head. Then you use a 4 to 1 header with open exhaust this along with extensive weight reduction is how most people achieve good times with all engine Honda's.

V-tec is actually for gas mileage and not power, you remove the V-tec on a DOHC head and fix it to where all 16 valves are working at all times.

I have worked on Hondas quite a bit I have a hopped up lil' CRX.

Its no fun,

They are expensive and require a motor swap of course.

There are 12 sec CRX's out here that simply use a japanese spec B16 or B18. I dont know the exact specifics but it is more expensive than our cars by far.

Thanks guys. You are pretty much confirming what I already knew. Thanks for the added info about the V-techs Dark_5.0.

A friend of mine's been blabbing about how he's gonna build himself a 10sec honda for $7000

You could build a 10 sec honda with $7000...if you stole most of the parts.

1st I would gut my crx out to about 1600 lbs.

B18 4 cylinder with tranny $3,000.00 E-bay used
Flat top Integra pistons $300.00 E-bay
2 aggresive cams $500.00
4 throttle body induction $1,200.00
4 to 1 long tube header $500.00
Timing gears $250.00
slicks $300.00
255 LPH fuel pump $100.00
70 shot of Nitrous $500.00
_____________
$ 6,650.00

Considering you did all the work your self the engine could be set-up tp run 10's for 7,000.00.

By the time you got a roll cage welded in and al;l the suspension work you would need you are looking at 10,000 minimum.

there is no way in hell a civic will make it into 10's without atleast 3k in suspension work. I mean ****, i see race teams putting like 30k into their cars to make them hit low 9's

The only way to get an Honda into the 10's with no more then 10K of cash is to drop in a V8

Some guy I read about last year has a Saturn turning 9's. Saturn block and head, turbocharged and Lord knows what else. It is still FWD so ??? It's pushing over 400 horses.

The newer Saturn L sedan ( the larger one) is actually rear wheel drive, the same chasis as the Caddy Cetera or CTS, or the Aussie Holden Commadore ( the sedan with the T-56 and LS-1 or LS-6). They are avail with a V-6 but the real power builder is the base 4 cyl.

This is the new GM Eccotec 2.2 L motor, only 145 hp in stock form. But if you read Car craft etc, according to GM this motor has enormous power potential. The stock bottom end can take almost 400 hp, and with aftermarket crank and rods and the stock block can hold over 600 hp. They made some drag Cavaliers that were still FWD. Don't know what this world is coming to, but slicks on a FWD car dont look right to me

10K including the price of the car, or does he already have the car? If he already has it, what is it?

Also, Dark_5.0, if you know so much about Hondas, one would think you'd know that it's VTEC and not V-tec...

V-tec or Vtec or Vtech...........It doesnt matter, I dont claim to know so much. I only claim to have totaly rebuilt 2 VTEC engines.

I was only offering up what I know and sharing my experience. I really do appreciate you finding and pointing out my grammatical error.

Thanks for caring,
