Didnt pass emissions!! HELP ME!!! arrrrgh!
Anything will help me here, I'm going out of town for two months and need my car to pass emissions by this friday. My hc level was 1.8 and the level needed to pass is 0.8, my CO level was 32 and I need a 15 to pass. My car is a 93' Probe 2.5L. Yes I know its not a Mustang! I have a 91'GT for weekend cruises, the Probe is my daily driver.
What I'm wondering is what I need to do so my levels go down. Its the original cat. converter, will a new cat. make a big difference? I took the O2 sensors out, one looked great the other was bad so I only replaced the bad one. I'm going to clean my MAF, heard if they're dirty the cause the car to run rich...any other ideas out there??? Thanks for the help in advance!! |

just a guess, but it seems to me that it could have something to do with the one o2 sensor looking bad and the other looking good. obviously it appears that one side is not flowing the same as the other. i wuold have replaced them both as you cant really tell just by looking if its good or not. (clean doesnt always mean good)
you might try changing spark plugs, and other basic tuneup items. i wouldnt think that one o2 would be clean and the other filthy though, that doesnt sound right. Replace O2 sensors in pairs. Replace the PCV valve. Replace the fuel filter. Replace spark plugs and check timing. Clean the IAB valve. Basically do a complete tune-up. Use 87 octane gasoline. If it's something like a cat, you may be able to get a waiver. I think most states put a cap on how much you have to spend to fix the problem. It was $200 hear in Minnesota for 81 and newer cars. A new cat would exceed that.

WHEN WAS LAST OIL CHANGE,YOU MUST REMEMBER THAT ALL THE GAS THAT DOES MANAGE TO GET BY THE RINGS ENDS UP IN THE OIL. AND THEN FUMES ARE LET BACK IN BY WAY OF PCV VALVE. JUST A THOUGHT.

Would like to let everyone know that I passed the emissions today. I changed all my filters, cleaned my pcv, iab, o2 a a few misc sensors. I clamped a vice-grip on a bolt to keep the shifter from going into 5th gear, and just incase I ran the car down to 1/8th tank and dumped a bottle of isopropyl alcohol in the tank. My readings were .025 and 3 today, my previous readings were 1.78 and 32. I'm not sure what helped the most, but I cerainly passed with flying colors!
Thanks everyone! |

My guess would be that it was your O2 sensors. As they wear out they start to report that the engine is running lean so the computer compensates by supplying more fuel.
Congratulations!! Not only do you have a clean car now, you have a well running car. ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |

Slick 50 has an amazing Injector Cleaner
2-step around $50 takes 15 min to do.. but it works.. some of the Jiffy lube shops carry them. I work for one and I ran one on my 88 LX 5.0L it works man. |
