Orient your jack so that the fill hole is in the highest position and fill slowly so the air can bleed out. It sounds like you may need an o-ring or seal since the the jack is not holding position. If you don't see any moisture on the outside of the jack, the oil may be leaking back into the reservoir when it should be holding the piston in place. Finding and replacing the seal will likely solve your problem.
