Timing Question?????
i pulled my motor out and when i put the dist. back in i tried to start it up and it just pops out the exhaust, my buddy said that it was prob. 180* off, does that mean when i brought the number one piston up it wasnt on the compression stroke, or could there be something else wrong??

One more time:
The easiest way to make sure you are on the compression stroke is to stick a wadded up paper napkin into the #1 spark plug hole, and rotate the engine. When the napkin pops out, you are on the compression stroke. Continue rotating the engine by hand until the timing marks line up (shouldn't have to turn it very much). Line up the timing marks at 10 degrees, and make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. Simple. Take care, -Chris

I go through that all the time when changing head gaskets. That procedure will work perfectly. If you have two people, it is easier if one person puts there finger in the #1 plug hole and the other slowly cranks the motor. When you hit the compression stroke you will know it Then just put your distributor back in and aim it to the #1 cylinder.
