I lost 3rd and 4th gears tonight.
To make a long story short, I thought I simply missed 3rd gear, but when I went to put the shifter back into 3rd, it was already there and it was just like being in neutral. So I reach for 4th, no grinding, let the clutch out, and it's yet another neutral. LOL I go back for 3rd gear, let the clutch out, still nothing. No grinding, no noise, NO NOTHING. WTF? Did I break a fork or something?
Has this happend to anyone? I still have a flawless 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. When I lost the two gears all I did was wind out 2nd, hit 3rd and the engine revved. I just figured I missed and that's how I got to where I am now. John |

Usually when you blow a gear up, you'll know about it. Everything in that box will be banging and crashing away.
Do you have an aftermarket shifter? If you do, try and adjust the stops. |

Thanks for the reply Unit. I have a Hurst shifter and played with the stops, to no avail. I just came in for a break, the tranny is about to come out. All that's left is the 4 bolts that hold it in. I'm thinking I must have broken or bent a fork, so I'm going to take the cover off and look inside to see what's up.
Thanks again, John |

Sure sounds like a shifter fork problem. I've replaced three of them this year and they all did pretty much the same thing. (three different vehicles mind you) On my truck the fork had worn so badly the fork slipped past the synchronizer ring and it jammed in second gear although the shifter went anywhere you wanted to put it.

Well, I got the tranny out and the top cover off. NOT GOOD. I twisted the output shaft in half right where it connects 3rd and 4th gears. What a day!

OUCH! Sure wish it was the shift fork. Would'a been a lot easier to fix.

Shifter forks in the T-5 do not bend. They are made of cast aluminum. Cast doesn't bend, it breaks.
Damn, that bites about the output shaft. |
