Default Ignition problem. Need help please!!!!

I have a friend with an 87 gt. He got into it today, and it wont turn over. Everything works, lights, radio, convertable top, fuel pump primes, everything is normal except it wont even attempt to turn over. I am thinking either solenoid or ignition switch. The car is an auto. I guess now that I think about it, it probably could be the neutral safety switch. What are some ways to test and eliminate the possibilities? I think the solenoid can be done with a test light, but I dont know about the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. Any fast responsed are greatly appreciated, I am going over there after work. Thanks folks.

1st thing have your buddy turn the key to the cranking positition and check the small wire at the solenoid for power. If you have power there it is either solenoid or starter. You can jump from the cable to the post and see if the starter turns over. If you have no power there you either have ignition switch or saftey switch problem. I don't have access to a manual at the moment (Iloaned it out) for the color wires but both can be be checked with test light or preferably a digital volt meter. The safety switch will have power with key on and in park or neutral. A lot of 87s have ig switch problems. Hope this gets you started

Default Question

Is your starter ingauging.

Do you have spark?

If your starter is not ingauging jump the starter relay with a straight slotted screw driver. Have the friend put the Key On. Replace that if that is your problem.
