Post tach and msd

i am having trouble with my tach. I have a 5" Auto Meter, with an MSD ignition. The tach is hooked up to a wire coming from the ignition box. Now, the light works, and the tach works fine when I first start the car. But after about 20 minutes or so i lose the tach. No rpms register at all. I still have lights, but no rpm reading. have any of you hooked a tach up directly to the negative post on the coil even though you had an aftermarket igntion, and how did that work out?
