![]() Should I get a used Explorer upper and lower or some guy's $225 used Cartech boxed upper for a stock lower?
In Jeg's catalog they advertise a Comp box that adds 20 hp and .3 off your 1/4 on a stock lower. It seems like the stock lower would need more help than just an upper plenum to make more power like at least porting. Anyone got the scoop on these intakes??? ![]()

![]() I've never heard anything good about the box intakes except for guys making insane horsepower. The stock intake is about as good as the stock heads, which is to say fine if you want to stay stock. If your looking to upgrade most of the aftermarket intakes are good, Edelbrock performer and rpm, Trick Flow makes a good intake for a good price and the Holley is very popular and can handle about as much power as you might want to throw at it. The question is how much money do you want to spend and what are your plans with your car.
Since you still have the stock heads, ported and polished, I don't think you need to go too big with the intake, I personally think the Holley is overkill unless your running serious HP or a blower or other power adder (just my opinion for all you Holley lovers out there). I'm running a ported Cobra I got used for $200 with Edelbrock heads and a TFS stage 1 cam and I'm just under 300rwhp and 315 lbs of torque. I think a ported Cobra or GT 40 would be a decent intake for your combo or maybe a Edelbrock Performer. If your going to upgrade to aftermarket heads in the future you might want to consider the Edelbrock RPM or even the Holley if you plan to go big. The Explorer lower is the same as the Holley BTW so that might not be a bad call either. Trick Flow also makes some very good intakes if you like the looks (which I personally don't). Anyway just my .02 Last edited by chris91LX; 02-28-2002 at 12:35 AM.. |

![]() I don't want to spend much because I want to help my g/f (SxyRedStang) pay her bills with my tax return. My upper plenum cracked in 2 places while putting in the spacer last weekend. So instead of just replacing the stock upper with another stock upper...you know...the horsepower bug is still alive
![]() 13's would be great considering all I have gotten yet is a 14.7@97mph with a 2.4 60' at best. I still don't know which is better: the stock lower with a boxed upper or the Explorer uppper and lower??

![]() I woulg go with the cobra, or street heat, intake bucause you are running the stock heads. You could also get the systemax I lower and it will work good foy you combo and you wallet. Your engine would also look stock at a glance.

![]() The box style uppers are typically only good for forced induction cars or NA motors turning high rpms. I would stay away from both the Cartech and Comp boxes if I were you bacause they are going to kill your torque.
And your right about doing some porting on the stock lower when adding these style upper intakes, it will need it.
