intake suggestions
I am starting to piece together a combination for my 94 mustang GT. I plan on supercharging and already have a gt-40 lower intake that's been ported. What's a good upper intake for blown applications that works with a gt40 lower and should I change any other part of the intake such as MAF, throttle body, etc.?
|
What heads are you running? Stock E7's?
If you are planning on keeping the stock heads, then just put a Cobra/GT40/Explorer upper intake on that lower and call it a day. If you will be using any aftermarket heads, I would ditch the intake and go for a holley systemax, performer rpm II, or the new short runner trick flow intake. MAF should be upgraded as well, as you will need larger injectors, so just buy a MAF calibrated for those. throttle body should be atleast a 70mm for a blown car, maybe 75 what are your overall plans for it? We need to know this before we can help you decide on individual parts. |
I plan on keeping the stock heads, my budget doesn't really allow for upgrading all of those components as well. Right now I'm planning on using a Vortech S-trim supercharger. I had looked at C&L's 76mm MAF setup but am not sure if any other modifications need to be made when changing injectors/maf in regards to the FMU that Vortech kits use. The car is a nice weather daily driver in the summer and my goal is 400-500hp but if I can't meet that with my setup that's ok.

intake
What Drew said. Stay with the Ford stuff with factory heads. Ive got a TFS street intake a mine and works great but since you already have lower I'd stay with it. Tony G. of HP Performance in Jax has a 86 twin turbo and has GT40 on it (runs low 10s and still has AC)

Put a Kenne Bell screw-charger on that GT40 lower intake. You'll be glad you did!
|
tmoss, I looked at those for a long time and is actually the reason I have a gt40 lower right now. I had planned on using that with a kenne bell blowzilla but then came across a low miles vortech kit for half the price. Can't beat the cost difference and I already purchased the Vortech so there's no going back now.

I like the Downs Box upper for the GT40 lower.

I have had the cobra the GT-40 and the explorer upper.
At the moment I am using a cobra upper intake with a ported GT-40 lower intake. After trying all 3 I prefer the cobra upper intake. The GT-40 leaves no room for future porting and the explorer is cast very poorly. The GT-40 ported lower with the stock heads and a blower should work well. I tried a comp polymers box upper for about ten minutes it killed the torque big time but my engine is N/A. |
My 97 Explorer intake is a very high quality casting. It's runner design is better than the 94-95 Cobra intakes also - the runners next to the throttle body runner are not "pinched" like the 94-95 Cobra uppers.
|
Well my explorer upper was a POS. I bought mine new and when I bolted it down the ear broke off cause the damn thing wasnt straight.
The cobra intake also looks much better IMO. |
whatever you do, dont get a holley intake! rip off!

I think I'm going to try and find a nice cobra intake, I prefer their look as well. Still not sure what I'm going to need for fuel. What size injectors am I going to want to not be starving my car around 400hp and not too big that it'll still be very streetable.
|
I would go with 36# injectors with your set-up.
|
The only way you'll see 400hp with that setup is if you run a ton of boost, I'd say atleast 16psi, which in turn is not safe with the stock cast pistons in your 94's engine. You mentioned that you don't have the budget to upgrade the rest of the components as well, but one thing is for sure: when you add a power adder to ANY engine, you HAVE to budget for broken parts, because they will break.
Going fast isn't as easy as grabbing any old mustang magazing and ordering the parts that they say make amazing numbers. You are going to need to address the rest of the driveline, with the stock tranny being the weak link, as well as addressing the fuel system to support this newfound power. I'm not trying to lecture, but if it were me in the same situation with a limited budget, then there is no way I would put a blower on the car. I would take that supercharger money and build up the critical components of the car, and put together a nice running naturally aspirated combination first, and then the supercharger added later will be that much more rewarding. Sorry if it seems like I'm lecturing, I'm just trying to give some sound advice. -Drew |
I dont know about that I have seen a bone stock stang with just exhaust put down very near 400 RWHP with a novi 1000 @ 8psi
387RWHP to be exact. |
A local made 410RWHP with a Stock 95 GT with 15psi and the stock Cobra intake. He just put GT40 heads with ported exhaust ports on, got me to port the lower and he will be re-dyno testing this month.

Drew,
you bring up some good points and were right in the fact that I wasn't fully taking into consideration the need to replace broken parts. I'm not figuring that into the cost, but should that come up I will be able to afford the repairs, I just don't want to ;) And I know not to believe the advertising hype like "gain up to 30hp!" I'm attempting to put together a nice streetable supercharger combo that isn't too extreme, which is why I'm on the boards asking for advice on what I need. I have started address the fuel system needs but don't have all the information yet, I need to know what size injectors a blown car will need in the 300-400hp range(Dark_5.0 suggested 36#), I have a new 65 gph fuel pump on the way, and need to know if the FMU ratio is relative to the injector size or if a 12:1 FMU will work no matter what injector size I have. |
I would highly suggest ditching the FMU all together. With just an aftermarket intake, 36lb injectors and no FMU should be fine with a blower.
Then if you step up in heads and cam, then depending on boost you can add 42's or 50's sometime later. Just adding a blower and a cobra intake will give you a very nice streetable supercharger combo, with 8-9psi of boost, you should see somewhere around 350rwhp, which is no chump on the streets and in your car could be anywhere from mid 12's to high 11's at the track depending on how you drive it and traction. What are you going to be using for tires? Any suspension mods yet? |
No FMU would save me a little money, but do larger injectors affect idle/streetability at all?
Right now I have Sumitomo HTRZ II tires but the rear tires need to be replaced soon. Not sure if I should keep them or get something else, anything costs a bit with an 18" rim. I have a few minor suspension mods, polyurethane bushings and kenny brown super subs. |
