Default Damn oil pumps !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another oil pump locked up on me !!!!!! This time I wasnt paying attention to my guages and I burned up the motor. Granted it had 178K on it but if I was looking at my guages I could have turned it off in time and put a new pump in it. I would have been good to go for at least over 200k. Anyone know why the oil pumps lock up so much???? I put a melling high volume in it and it was my second one that locked up,

Are you sure it's the pump and not the pump driveshaft??

I have problems with my oil pressure getting extremely high on long drives, its an old motor as with 5ohCOUPE.

Which Im told can twist the shaft from the distributor?

Not sure if this help but I though I'd put the idea on the table.

You are wasting your money and using up more horsepower by using a high volume pump.
The stock one flows plenty of oil.

The driveshaft from the pump is twisting like a pretzel because the pump locking up. After I pull the pump out the pump wont spin even if I put a breaker bar on it. I tried the strong oil pump shaft before and it just snapped like a twig instead of twisting. I think I will be ok when I put my new short block in.

Does anyone know what could be causing these pumps to 'lock up'? I'm curious.

Thanks,
E

Have you taken any of the pumps apart to see if any small foreign objects are getting in there to lock it up?

I've had one pump lock up on me last year, and it turned out to be one of the very tiny metal spacers that ford puts in the FACTORY valve cover gaskets that finally made its way down into the pump. I think it was lodged somewhere in the head, and then when I pulled the heads off to change the gaskets, it loosened it up and decided to head down into the pump

Are you using the same brand of pump everytime? If so then it could be a manufactures defect

Ive been using the melling HV oil pumps. It might just be a high mileage engine thing. I had just changed the oil too so I know it wasnt because of old oil. Who knows what is going on, I just know that im gonna put a dummy light in my car for the oil pressure so if it happens again ill see a big red light in my face.

I pulled a twizler looking pump shaft out of my motor once, so right then and there I replaced the shaft with a heavy duty one, and I'm also looking into a warning light to tell me when things like that happen, just in case I'm not paying close attention to the gauge when it drops. Just food for thought I guess.

Anyone able to tell my why my oil pressure rises on long straight drives?, old engine with a factory pump. It goes away when I take my foot of the gas but comes back soon after.

OzRuss, your oil pressure will always be higher when your engine is revving higher. The oil pump is spun by the bottom of the distributor. so when your engine spins faster, so does the pump, causing more pressure

True. However I have a 2.79 diff and a 0.78 5th speed on the box so at 110KM/h (about 68MPH) the motor spins about 1500 RPM.

It doesnt build up when Im reving hard only when Im driving long straight cruizing roads.

Any other thoughs?

Arrow Oil Pump

I had 3 pumps go on my 347 within 2 months. Until the shop that built my motor used what they called a blue printed oil pump. ( i guess they sent it to the machine shop) Now, I can rev my 347 to 7K all day long (not that I do that)
