Exclamation Klunk?

I have a '91 GT - AOD.

At first I thought it was the tranny. It only happens when I come to a stop and start going again. I get a slight klunk and I can't find it!

Any thoughts?

Where does it sound like its coming from? My first thought would be a u-joint or maybe a tranny or engine mount.

The AOD can "clunk" if your TV cable is adjusted to far in or out, but in your case, sounds like a suspension issue. Put it up on jack stands, pull the wheels and start looking around.

I dont think that it is the Aod also because it shifts hard and where it needs to shift soft it does that to. I guess I will just half to start digging

check the TV cable for proper adjustment first. I chased a clunk for a long time before I figured out it was in the AOD and the cable adjustment.

Remove your intake hose for some extra room. Pop the TV cable off of the TB bracket with a screwdriver.

Roll it over, and then youll see a white thing on the bottom. With a small screwdriver, push in on the white thing, sliding it up. This will release the "adjustment mechanism" from the cable, and you should be able to slide the mechanism back and forth on the cable. make sure it slides freely with no binding.

then, while holding the TB closed against the idle stop screw, push the TV cable into the TB bushing, which will push in the pin at the same time you are going into the grommet. thus locking the cabe to a position that is TV valve on tranny fully closed, while the Throttle body is fully closed.

Hummm. You can make it happen if your driving and rock the car left and right with the wheel? Have you gotten underneath and looked around. Check out the sway bar, bushings, endlinks for anything loose or damaged. Another thing you might want to try is, jack the car up on one side by the A arm till the tire is off the ground. Then see if you can wiggle the tire, back and forth, side to side etc. Then repeat for other side. See what happenes, it could be anything that you have over looked. Good luck!

Is that how you adjust the TV linkage? I thought there was another step to it. Just becareful cause you can fry the AOD if its not done properly!!

No, your AOD is safe. That is the baseline adjustment, the correct way to do it, and the best way if you dont want the hassle of connecting pressure gauges to your transmission to adjust it that way.
