upgrading computer memory?
I want to upgrade my computer's RAM. I currently have 512 mb and my Sony computer is listed as having 3 memory slots (3 banks of 1) and a maximum memory of 1.5 GB.
I think for now I will buy another 512mb chip. All I need to do is plug it into an open memory slot, correct? Now, if I ever wanted to max out my memory, how would I go about reaching that 1.5 GB of max memory?

Okay, I have done some research and I guess that my computer can hold 3 512MB chips. Where is the best place to purcahse these? I am finding prices around 70 bucks for a 512MB chip.
Also, what should I look for when buying these? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I get what I need.

Check out pricewatch.com.
They are hard to beat as far as prices are concerned. I would focus on buying either Kingston, Crucial, or Mushkin and I would stay away from the "Generic" RAM brands. Thanks, DoranW

why do you want to upgrade the RAM....I have a feeling that if you are experiencing less than satisfactory performance it may be due to something else....
512MB is not bad....what kind of computer are you running, what is the CPU frequency(speed) and what is the RAM type SDRAM(100,133) or DDR RAM (1600,2100,2700,3200) and how many icons appear in your "quick launch" area next to the clock in the bottom right. There are many more questions, but these can give a general idea. And I think Pricewatch is the best resource I've ever used!

I have a Sony Vaio, 2.66 GHz with 512MB DDR 2100 ram.
I have 9 quick launch icons on my taskbar. My computer performs great for most of the stuff I do, but I am working on a project this summer and the program I am using really seems to eat up my resources. I am running Altair's Hyperworks (Hypermesh and Optistruct) for anyone familiar with it, and when it is solving problems I want to be able to run another application of it at the same time. My computer barely does that now, so I though some more Ram may help the situation.
