Long-tube headers or not??
Ok, I have a mass-air '88 GT 306 with edelbrock Performer 5.0, tfs Twisted wedge heads, pullies, etc... Compression is around 10.3:1.
I use a 150 HP dry system, but the jets are tweaked, it's probably about 175. Comp cams is setting me up with a nitrous-specific camshaft. Anyways, I'm wondering if long-tubes will benefit my combination. Please note that I'm not concerned with losing a little on the motor, rather I want to gain as much as possible on the nitrous. And I'm planning to switch to the RPM upper intake as well so I can raise the shift points to around 6200. |
What is your current exhaust system? Longtubes seem to be the way to go but you need to see if longtubes will hook up to your current system. My MAC's work just fine and are cheep enough, but my frined just got a set of bassani longtube step headers and matching x-pipe. I got to say its FLAWLESS! its more expensive than the MAC stuff but it sure is sweet.

Long Tube headers generate more horsepower and torque, throughout the power range than shortys.. Plus they sound
deeper than stangs with shortys. I agree the Basani setup rocks! We went with all MAC long-tubes etc we've got some cost issues. I"m currious - you've converted your 88 to mass air. What kit did you use to go from SD to MAF? Was it easy to install? |
long tubes are definately the way to go. Although they are more difficult to install, they do generate more hp and torque like mustang 289 stated. All you are going to need is the oxygen sensor extensions and shorty h-pipe. good luck

Long Tubes
I think the direction you are going with the car... long tubes is the way to go...your getting into the horsepower zone where long headers with benefit you... you might even have to look and the rest of the exhaust and see if its is sufficiant for the flow the long tubes will provide... The Force

nos and longtubes go hand to hand, and with a nos spec cam, you can even run a bigger primary and get all kinds of topend.
