Default Looking at a car, Opinions please!!

Well I am interested in buying a 1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0, 5 speed with a Hurst Shifter and 2 Flowmaster Mufflers. It's metallic blue with 110k on the engine and 150k on the body. I was told it will need 2 tires, Drivers Seat, Heater blower motor, and carpet kit. He is asking $3500obo. What do you guys think?? He mentioned taking 2900, but I'm not sure....Opinions Please! It also needs a rear passenger spring. He told me the car sags to that side. What causes that?? And what do you guys think?? think it's worth 2500?? It seems I'll only need to drop about $500 into it to make it look and run great?

just, the most important thing when looking at the body is check the bottomof the doors and the hatch those are the problem areas for rust on the hatches, carpet kits are cheep but anoying when u install them. Mine acutally sags a little bit on one side but one of my bushings is kinda falling out i need to replace it. just to give u an idea i payed 6500.00 for my 87 hatch with 70,000 original miles.

See if you can get it for 2500.00 Sounds like a decent ride but make sure you don't have to put a clutch in it. I'd also see if you can find out why the original engine went with 40K on it. Might be worth it.

Lightbulb Opinion

150,000 on the body and interior will generate interior wear as well as other problems due to age and mileage.

You may need new springs which are readily available and not expensive but installation is tricky and best done by a pro - which isn't cheap.

The interior stuff is easy to replace and a used seat isn't expensive but it may not match the rest of the interior.

You're looking at a 13-year-old car with high miles so don't pay too much, even if it's a Mustang. Guaranteed that this 'Stang will need more work soon after you buy it.

I would offer $2500. and settle at $2750. or as close to $2,500. as you can get.

Remind the buyer that the Mustang needs work and is far, far from mint. Bring cash to the deal and let him see it. Talk is cheap but cash money is always a great motivation to make a deal. Be ready to make the deal right there. Getting a price you want and then walking away to 'talk to somebody' or 'look around some more' is insulting.

I've bought and sold a lot of cars and guys that try to get a good price and then won't buy the car are jerks, in my book, and I would rather keep the car then sell to them, once they pull that. Be cool, be real and be ready to hand over the cash and take the car if you can get the price you want.

Good luck.

be weary of the sagging to one side. A lot of stangs have a slight sag to one side, and new springs does not fix the problem. If its got a real bad sag, you might not be able to get it out easily.

rear main seal leaks arent a big deal. Just keep adding oil occasionally or replace it.

by the way, I just saw an 89 or 90 LX convertible for sale. It has a shifter, powerdyne blower, 95,000 miles, and was pretty clean overall. He was asking $9,200.00
