Well, it finally broke!
Hi,
Took stang out today after not driving it for 2.5 days. Right from the get go, the car didn't feel right. Went to court to set a court date on my tickets, deposit my cheque, and went to class. My bro drops me off and goes home...He later gets on ICQ and tells me the driver side upper control arm has broken off. I just freaked; I had to get home to see and when I did, I felt so f*ckin pissed off (and sad). I knew this was coming. I got home and jacked up the car, and took a close look. The arm hooks up to two points; one is on the differential, and another to the chasis/body. Well, where it holds onto the chasis/body is where it cracked off from. The arm and bushing pivots are in good shape however. It basically took out a good chunk around the pivot; it doesn't look rusted however. No holes in body or anything. Here's a pic (from another stang) showing you basically what broke off. The chunk outlined by the green line is what broke: http://www.cubicdesign.com/mustang/upperbreak1.jpg I called a few places and was quoted between $150US and $300US for the job (I can deal with that). Damn, at least now that it's broken, I have a reason to get it fixed, and hopefully my car will ride better once it's fixed. I am willing to shell out $300US if I have to. Looks like it's time to add some reinforcement to those torque boxes.

Hi,
Yep, I am so sure it's the rear upper torque boxes that broke off on the driver side. Thing is, it broke off into two pieces... some of it is left still stuck to the body, and the other is on the control arm pivot. Infact, I can see 3 spots where the box got pulled off from, which I am now assuming are the weld marks. Do I need to get new torque boxes put in there or have them weld up the two pieces? I think I should consider getting another torque box from another stang (mechanic has junkyard of fox stangs). Hopefully, cost is low. Fingers crossed. Im eager to call up the shop first thing tomorrow but I got classes from 8am - 4pm. Bye! ------------------ Gautam N. Lad http://www.cubicdesign.com http://www.cubicdesign.com/mustang/ |
