Default manual steering rack....which will swap?

I'm thinking about converting manual steering for my '82GT.
Which racks will swap right in? Would one work from a mustangII?

I could be wrong, but I don't think a Mustang II rack will work at all.

Try autozone, they are rumoured to carry manual racks from 82-86 Mustangs. I'm getting one for my 86 from the local Car Quest store (canadian tho so its pricey).

Hope that helps.

If youre going to drive it on the street youll be sorry for getting rid of PS. But if youre going to change it over go with Flaming river quick ratio. It costs more but it will steer better

I disagree. My car is extremely easy to turn and I love driving it on the street. My wife has no problems or complaints about the steering either.

I got a rack from Autozone and used the Flaming River shaft kit.

82GT, you may not need the flaming river shaft kit. Some of the early foxes had manual racks in them, and have an adjustment in the steering shaft. My friend's 85 had this, and we bolted up the stock shaft (rag joint) and everything works fine.

As for driving, its pretty good. Slow, tight turns suck tho. But its better than what I thought, the last manual steering car I drove was a 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom with a 352. Talk about a huge steering wheel, and it had manual brakes. What a drive tho....

Anyway, hope this all helps.

I don't know...how much hp will I gain by switching? If I won't gain that much then I'll stick with the PS.
Hell.....I have major traction problem now. I should be working on the suspension first and things I should of had a long time ago.....like an 8.8 rear. You got it...there is still a 7.5 rear under this thing. It won't last long when I get this thing to hook up

You will not gain any horsepower by getting rid of the power sterring. If your going in a straight line, the ps wont hurt your power. It will only rob power when you turn.

I got rid of mine to get weight off of the front of the car.

I dont know about HP but my car seemed to rev up quicker without the power steering.

You should probably pick up 5 horsepower or so i'd guess, anything that has to pump pressure as high as 1500 psi (or somewhere around there) will produce some drag on the engine.

I just told them I needed a manual rack for my '89. It looks to be a rebuilt Ford unit.
