Installing roller cam in 1979 302

Ok. I have a 1979 ford 302 bored .040. I want to put the roller cam in the block to make it the 5.0. I have a good roller cam with all the dog bones and lifters. I also have a set of 1987 5.0 heads. I know I need to drill and tap 2 holes in the valley. What about cam bearings? Will 79 cam bearings work with a roller cam? Do I need to plasta guage the cam bearings and install cam bearings for a roller cam?

You have to use a different bass circle cam. Check it out with Comp cams they will tell you what all you need. Good luck!

Wouldn't it have to be for a 351windsor?

reg. roller cam is fine no need for a diff base with a ford lots of room in the bottom of them unlike chevys

Yeah, typical rollers are set up like a 351, same firing order and what not, even if you look at Comps cam part numbers 351 and 5.0 engines use the same 35 prefix.

i thought the roller cam blocks had taller holes for the hydraulic lifters in them. well at least thats what i read. 1985 and up.

Bourbon is correct. The reason for the smaller base circle cam is not to clear anything but to keep from pushing the lifters too high and causing a loss of oil pressure. As I said before check with comp cams as to proper components.

This is correct. If you dont use a smaller base circle cam the lifters actually lift the dog bone.
