I don't think distance is a problem, but putting the MAF in the fenderwell out of the heat of the engine bay is a good thing for sure. It will always be drawing cooler air than whats underneath the hood in the engine compartment. As far as how much air it will draw depends on so many factors...cam, intake, heads etc.... A ram air may help a little, I don't think it could hurt.
