Default Car won't start - whirring noise

Just bought a 1969 Mustang as a fixer upper. I have basic car knowledge but need to learn a lot more. Anyway, wondering if anyone has suggestions. Newer motor (20K miles). Car started fine when I bought it. Took it home, shut it down, tried starting again but only get whirring noise when I turn the ignition. No clicking, no engine turnover. Should I test battery first then move on down the line or does anyone think it could be the coil, solenoid, starter, etc.? Thanks for you help.
