mas air to speed density?
 
Just wondering what all is to be done to go from maf to speed density and make it work? What all parts would have to be switched? Just trying to learn more about all the EFI systems.

You know thats a good question.....but a bad idea in my opinion, I believe all you would have to do is remove the mass air sensor, and install the SD computer, you would need the SD inlet tube also.

With your package as listed, if you went backward and changed to SD, you would have driveability problems without a custom chip, PMS, or the like.

No flames, but why do you want to go to SD?:confused:

it wouldnt be worth the money for the small amount of gain, if any

but if you insist on swapping over, I still have my SD computer if you wanna buy it

The harness would obviously change a little, the computer, getting rid of the MAF sensor, inlet tube. I don't know about the sensors.

Personally, I'm a speed density fan, but I wouldn't advise a retro-grade.

Yes the harness would change too, forgot that, also MAF cars use a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) located on the trans end of the speedo cable. (This sensor tells the puter the car is moving), I don't know if you would have to remove it or what, I think SD cars of 88 got it but 87 didn't, not sure.

I'm not switching over to SD I'm just learning more about the setup . A buddy bought a "89 stang V-8 and the MAF setup was all gone even the computer . He was asking me about it and if it would work . Thanks for the input.

speed density uses a MAP sensor, and MAF uses a BAP sensor. Similar, one goes in the manifold(speed density), the other measure atmosheric pressure(MAF).

Where is the map sensor on the manifold of the SD cars? I have no idea.

The senser is on the firewall in both cases. On speed density cars, the sensor has a vacuum hose going to the upper intake manifold (usually to the bottom of the upper, close to the vacuum tree on the factory manifold) and a connector with a couple wires going to it. MAP = manifold absolute pressure


The Mass Air cars can use the same sensor, except the vacuum hose is removed and the vacuum port plugged on the manifold, and the vacuum port on the sensor where the vacuum hose used to go, now goes to outside air and the sensor just reads ambient or atmospheric pressure. BAP = barometric air pressure
